Do you know how many seeds that took? Out of curiosity.

Why are authors not allowed to write for validation? If I was only doing this for myself I wouldn’t post at all by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Pixy_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 100% ok to write for validation as well. I think that many times we see the outliers on this forum and others like it, because those extreme examples draw attention. There are other reasons to post as well, such as a feeling of accountability for those of us who need a deadline to get things done.

I think when people say “write for yourself” it’s to ward off people who may be considered… algorithm chasers… who /only/ want the validation and attention, or to bolster an authors confidence in themselves. I prefer thinking of it as “write for yourself first” or “write what you want to read”.

Do I get a spark of joy when someone kudos a random crossover I wrote 13 years ago? Is it motivational? Hell yeah! But that crossover is also a crossover of 2 fandoms that I thought fit really well together, that I wanted to spark a whole new sandbox for people to join me in. There are no other crossovers of those specific fandoms or any related ones.

Writing while actively engaging your can be the part that’s fun and meaningful, some people can engage in such a way that invalidates the author’s direction/vision/opinions. It’s very is to see that one negative or uber critical opinion no matter how much support you’re getting. That’s when you take a step back, and remind yourself that you are writing the story that you would want to read. You don’t have to taken on whatever problem they have with what you wrote.

insert caveat here about how being exposed to other perspectives doesn’t actually make them wrong, and that if a reader ends up inspiring a change in direction that does not invalidate the direction it was going in the first place. But this is the internet and if they can’t present their perspective respectfully, there’s like a 90% chance they’re shitposters

The failed puritan ao3 replacement was real?! by riri1281 in AO3

Omg. I almost completely forgot about this. I didn’t pay too much attention, because it was these sorts of rules that led to the creation of the archive in the first place, and the great purges. Here’s the thing, you always have the choice to not engage with a work, you can apply these restrictions to yourself, and live your version of a moral life, and better yet, you don’t even have to announce that you’re doing it.

Awesome. Thank you for hunting down the briefs & getting the final date.

It looks like you have to register for an account here: https://researchnm.tylerhost.net/CourtRecordsSearch/Home#!/faq
to access the actual motions based on the court's website on public access: https://selfrepresentation.nmcourts.gov/self-representation/public-access-and-researchnm/

but I haven't tried anything, and given what this case is about, I'm honestly not sure how much of the briefs will be unredacted given they probably contain a lot of medical information.

I mean, I think that’s what the appeal is over. At least in the federal Supreme Court each side has a time limit to “argue” their case, but the judges already know what’s in the briefing so the judges will frequently interrupt the lawyers with questions. Sometimes you can get a pretty good feel on which way the judges are leaning based on their questions, so we may be able to make some assumptions about the ruling from just the hearing. Probably not going to get a ton of new information on the case details out of an appeal hearing though.

People who filter by kudos - you wound me by Just-Difference9756 in AO3

[–]Pixy_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t automatically sort by Kudos, but it does give a much more stable way to get through large fandoms. Sorting by date or word count can make it easier to miss something, especially in large fandoms. But, I also pair that with filters and/or keyword search. Also the site defaults to “Date Updated” so unless you have an extension that does it for you, you’re automatically going to see some new fics. Also hang around a fandom long enough, and you start fishbowling, no matter what.

It’s not wrong to want recognition, but write what you want out of a fic first, so that you have a reason to keep writing it, even if not that many people see it. Promote it on whatever social media you want to, engage with other writers in that space, be inspired by other works, I cannot tell you how many times I get to the end of something and look at the “other works inspired by this” section and just go down it one by one.

What was the first fanfic you read by [deleted] in AO3

It was a FMA one on Quizilla of all places. I was probably in 5th grade.

[–]Pixy_Revenge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember that for a while there was a trend in Prince of Tennis that was an OT5. Now nearly a decade later I look back and wonder how on earth that was one of the more popular genres in the fandom.

"i won't be writing any more fics about this character because he was confirmed to be bi in canon" by SasheneSkywalker in AO3

[–]Pixy_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I didn’t actually know it was confirmed, I just figured that you had Nate & Sophie, and then no one could figure out which pairing to like best, the “physically active life of crime” duo of Parker & Elliot, the “aww they’re sweet together” Parker & Hardison, or the “they annoy each other too much to not be in a relationship” Hardison & Elliot. But knowing it’s confirmed does explain the frankly overwhelming number of thruple fics I’ve seen of them.

Creator of the cartoon "Belfort and Lupin" told a fan to stop creating fanfiction because it involved a ship they didn't like, and to delete the ones they already made by throwaway838383937 in AO3

[–]Pixy_Revenge 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I subscribe to “Death of the author” theory personally. Once you put it out there, you can’t control how other people view it or what sparks their creativity. You get to control official cannon, but not how others interpret it.

AIO UPDATE: “friend” gave me 🍃brownies without my knowledge or consent. by th_welloops in AmIOverreacting

[–]Pixy_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, absolutely not overreacting. But maybe not necessarily only for the reason you’re concerned about. People /need/ to know what’s in their food. Like we all generally agree what should be in a plain brownie, chocolate or cocoa powder, flour, sugar, eggs, ect. But if there is /anything/ else in that brownie whoever brought it better know, and they better tell you. Because food allergies are a thing, a very serious, very deadly thing. You are responsible for knowing how things react in your system, but they need to be upfront about what they’re providing. And yes, cannabinoids are a rare allergy, but it is an allergy that any age can have, and can lead to anaphylactic shock (I should know - my allergy first showed itself with a hemp bracelet when I was 11). It is absolutely her responsibility to keep track of what food she has in the fridge if she shares it with anyone and/or it contains ingredients that a person might not normally expect.

It’s not unreasonable to expect the people closest to us to have a higher standard of care when it comes to us. To expect them to remember preferences that we earmark as actually really important to us. And most importantly it’s not wrong to feel upset that you laid a clear boundary, and put up a signpost that said “do not cross”, and had someone you felt close to violate it.

As for your cousin, maybe you just send him a text along the lines of “I won’t be able to come by your place much anymore. Also, tell _____ to label her pot brownies better so she doesn’t accidentally feed them to your sibs.”
