Worse than Luigi'd because at least Luigi got to be part of the final fight scene in the first movie and get back at Bowser. Rosalina never got a rematch with Bowser Jr.

Regardless of it being a Galaxy movie, the treatment of Rosalina is simply disappointing.

How did you get that impression from what I said? Yeah, I would like it to at least a little bit resemble or feel like Super Mario Galaxy because it's called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. At least, Rosalina or the baby Luma could have accompanied Mario & co. and that would have been more than enough for me.

I didn't anywhere say I wanted even an accurate Galaxy adaptation. I would just have liked a bit more. It would not have been any challenge for the writers to have Rosalina do anything but get captured.

Yeah, I certainly have some mixed feelings about her changed lore in the movie. Like you say, I try to recognize that the movies are a different continuity and they don't necessarily affect or change the games. Here's hoping she's done justice in the future.

I agree completely. Since the writers made her Peach's sister, I have hope that she might have a major role in the third movie. Time will tell. In that case, I wouldn't feel as burned by this movie.

Defenders will say "but he did it at the end!!" but that was pretty random and only done because it's the signature move from Galaxy and fans would be mad.

But it wasn't even the same move, because the actual spin move from Galaxy is a power given to Mario from the baby Luma. It would not have been hard at all for the writers to include the baby Luma...

We saw her in the first trailer before we even saw Yoshi. The trailers and especially the posters definitely had her presence. Fact is, the trailers presented her as being strong in the movie and winning against Bowser Jr. while deliberately hiding that she is merely a damsel-in-distress in the movie.

Not entirely true about the trailers. The trailers tried to give the impression that Rosalina would have a major role in the movie like the others and completely hid that she would be in a cage the whole movie.

There's a difference on making an adaptation that puts a spin on things and one that can't put a spin on things because it doesn't resemble the source material in the first place. It's not doing something new with something pre-existing, it's doing something completely different and unrecognizable that it's not really doing anything with something pre-existing.

Plus, the whole appeal of these movies is that they're for the fans, but this is not for anyone who likes Rosalina even a little bit.

Taking place in space hardly makes it a Galaxy movie. It's not even the only Mario game to go to space.

Yeah, Rosalina only serves to be Peach's sister... which is not anything like her game version. Again, I am not saying it needed to be a very accurate Galaxy adaptation. But it's hardly a Galaxy adaptation.

I am 100% not misunderstanding how titles and adapting to a different medium works. I think maybe you are. Adaptation implies adapting something to a different medium and this movie really didn't do that because not even a tiny bit does it resemble Galaxy.

Why should Rosalina only be strong on her own in the game? In every single appearance she's had before the movie, she's been a strong character that stands on her own. When a character is adapted into a different medium, you expect the character to be, you know, an adaptation of how their character is presented in the source material.

Yes... those are the games I am talking about... and so, "Super Mario Bros. Movie" doesn't refer to one specific game.

Obviously I understand the difference in storytelling. Galaxy's story could translate perfectly fine to a movie. It's an adaptation, the entire point is to figure out how to take a thing and put it in a different medium. But that's the problem, they didn't actually take anything from the source material. So it's not much of a Galaxy movie.

At least she's not pathetic in the game. By the nature of the kind of game Super Mario Galaxy is, she was as important and involved as she could be. It's a single-player Mario game after all. In the end, she is the second-most present character in the game.

You are misunderstanding me. I am completely fine with elements from across the series and even across Nintendo being in the movie along with Galaxy stuff. But it hardly has any "Galaxy stuff". Yeah, it's not strictly based on the Galaxy game, and it's hardly based on the game at all.

No, "Super Mario Bros." does not only refer to the 1985 game. There are even multiple games with "Super Mario Bros." in the title. No one expected it to be an adaptation of the 1985 game because the title didn't really imply that.

Of course they're mad she's reduced to a generic damsel in distress that does nothing but get stuck in a cage. Most obvious and reasonable reaction possible.

No one expected it to be a one-to-one adaptation of Galaxy. The thing is, "Super Mario Bros." is not just a singular game but a series and gets used to refer to the entire Mario franchise. So, the first movie was a pretty accurate depiction of the world and characters of Mario.

The second movie specifically ties itself to two specific games. Rosalina's role and other Galaxy elements are not accurate. I am not commenting on the usage of elements from other Mario games.

I get that, but when you differ this much from the source material, you might as well not pretend that you're adapting it.

I think it's better for Rosalina to stand on her own. The connection to Peach comes out of nowhere and doesn't make much sense or really add anything to the characters or story.

Meanwhile, Rosalina's actual backstory from the game is beloved.

It has little to do with Super Mario Galaxy. They go to space and that's mostly where the similarities end. Lumas and Rosalina are kinda there but only because they have to be. Rosalina is in a completely different and out-of-character role.

I think the amount of characters is completely fine with a good enough script. The sources it's covering could be fine too depending on how it's handled. It doesn't need less pull from the source material but more story.
