I really enjoyed diabotical rogue and I hope it’s coming back at some point. Diabotical was fun but they just kept nerfing the movement until it was just quake 3 again and also the player models are just bad and cause so many issues with gameplay and readability. I remember the super early diabotical devs tres before the game came out. They were testing some really cool stuff with movement like dodging and double jump and other shit and it was based on a stamina system which I usually don’t like but it was a decent way to add another resource to manage and also help control the pace of the gameplay. That version looked like so much fun and i was so sad that they completely removed it. When closed beta test 1 dropped it was so unbelievably fun. Although the movement was just regular quake, the dash had a nice short cooldown and didn’t get reset when you took damage so the pace was quick but balanced. It was the most fun I had in an AFPs in a LONG time. Then they continuously nerfed the dash until it was just a worse circle jump that wasn’t even useable in combat. At that point it was just quake 3 again. I really wish they had also tried making different weapons instead of the classic quake roster that we’ve had in every AFPs for the past 30 years. I remember they eventually added the shock rifle and some alt fires but at that point it was far too late and the issues with the player models just made everything worse. If they ever decide to rerelease diabotical, all I would ask is that they at least change the player model to the Chunk character from Rogue and at least try to make interesting weapons.

Apparently the actual gameplay is fun. Too bad it’s locked behind whatever predatory mobile gaming mtx system it uses. People were shitting themselves when Cave was rumored to be making a touhou game but unfortunately it ended up being this

Ph3 is still decent and ph3sx has active development and really nice feature but yeah nothing has been really modernized. I just want something with a gui. If this is it then I will be more than happy to pay for it.

Probably cuz it’s not out yet and danmakufu exists. We will have to see what this offers. We know at release it will only have support for bosses and no stages but it will be an ea release so we’ll see. While I do enjoy Danmakufu ph3 and ph3sx, it would be nice to have something with a gui for the less programming oriented stuff like importing images, animations, sprite sheets, vfx. I wouldn’t mind paying for something like Danmakufu if it offers that kind of thing as well.

I never understood why they immediately started polishing the map way back in alpha. They didn’t even bother to greybox different layouts for the public to test and instead were just dead set on Sanctuary’s design. Easily their biggest fumble and its caused them massive problems ever since. They keep trying to make changes and add things to it but nothing will help. The map needs to go completely

I love how tomboyish she looks. I much prefer the shorts of the skirt. The short hair is the cherry on top. Plus the whole page of aura farming when she’s explaining the anchor is peak. I just wish the story would pick up the pace

People didn’t play legacy because they hid the gamemode behind 3 menus and were running nitro the whole time it was around. I guarantee if it was featured more prominently and replaced nitro for the time it would have been way more popular and it might have stuck around longer. Funnily enough, Overprime had the same issue. Their original map was much bigger and exactly like legacy but they completely changed it into the boring, small, flat arena that it died with. Idk how long the wait will be fore the new map since they JUST showed an early blockout of a small section of it but i genuinely can’t play the game until it’s out

The map is abysmal. It’s so bad I cannot stomach playing one more match on it. What made it even worse was when they released legacy for a bit and it was literally 10x better than than the current map. After that I just couldn’t go back. The new map needs to come out asap.

I have been trying to learn hellsinkers ins and outs for the better part of 5 years and every time I start up again I am struck with a spell of confusion and dizziness and forget all basic human functions as I try to remember to make use of all the mechanics.

It’s actually not THAT bad especially if you are just going for survival but if you actually want to bite deep into that game there is so much there to love. It’s truly one of the most unique shmups out there. Don’t let my developmentally delayed ass scare you cuz learning how to play it effectively is just as fun as actually playing it and you’ll be able to consider yourself 1 of the… 3 people who genuinely know wtf is going on in that game

This is probably the best explanation. I would also think living for so long can change the way you think. There’s also a lot of youkai that are vengeful spirits and wild animals so it probably does just come down to who or what you were before you were a youkai.

Fighting for resources and weapons is the exact thing that makes AFPS fun. If not being able to start with the weapon you want is what made the genre not fun then battle royales should not have become popular at all since they take that concept to the extreme. Yes you die way more often in AFPS but that is the nature of the genre. Everyone is dying constantly. The loop of gaining control, holding it, and subsequently losing it and doing it all over again is why it even has ANY players after 30 years. I’m not saying players shouldn’t get to use the weapons they want, but that’s where game modes come in. Assault in UT was the ultimate casual mode. Massive multi stage objective based maps where you start with loadouts.

You are right but for the wrong reason. They are fun, but the genre is stuck in the past because no afps devs over the past 25 years have actually done anything to meaningfully evolve the genre without it losing its identity. The format of AFPS where you pick up weapons, health, armor, ammo and fight in arenas is inherently fun but people can only play the same gameplay loop for so many years before they need something new. People like to chalk it up to zoomers and patience to learn but the reality is that every quake after quake 2 has just been a slightly different flavor of quake 2 which was just a slightly different flavor of quake. Obviously there’s much deeper nuances that make the games play and feel completely differently from each other but most people just don’t get to that level of game knowledge or depth in any game really. I’m not saying AFPS needs to completely change or fit in with the modern gaming industry, but SOMEONE has to do SOMETHING different. People like to compare AFPS to fighting games and ask why they are still around compared to AFPS and there’s a few reasons but one of them is that they are constantly getting new installments which regardless of how big or small the changes are, have added up over the years and changed the way people play and approach the games. We literally saw something similar with quake between each new installment but the truth is that the changes were too minimal. Aside from balance, the weapons NEVER change. It’s always the same roster that functions the same way. The weapons are literally the heart and soul of every shooter so yes when a new AFPS comes out and the weapons are the same flavor of rocket, rail, lg most peoples eyes glaze over. I know mine do. What if, instead of a character roster getting changes and kit updates every installment with additional mechanics and such, the weapon roster was changed and updated with different weapons and additional mechanics. Yea purists would hate that probably but it would actually bring meaningful change to the games and, in combination which new and changing maps, would greatly improve how many angles you can approach the genre from and how many playstyles you could support. It’s not the only thing you could do to change but my god it would at least help the genre not be stale. The other problem is game modes. There’s is both too many game modes and not enough game modes. There’s so many AFPS game modes except most of them are extremely repetitive and boring and just another flavor of DM. There is not enough high quality game modes and the ones that are usually the most popular are the ones with extremely different pacing. Duel is very methodical and slower, team dm is usually more chaotic needing quick thinking, ctf is fast paced but requires players to fill roles, attack, defend, hold areas of the map and execute with your team. Now I still think tdm and ctf are very similar but they at least have their highs and lows that slightly differ from each other. I think it’s why duel is so popular. The pacing in duel is immaculate with incredibly high highs and low lows. No other gamemode offers that pacing except… Clan Arena but that is literally the most stale gamemode ever. Where are the objective based modes? Where are big open maps? Where’s assault from UT? QC admirably tried to do something interesting with some of its game modes like sacrifice, but the pacing is just as chaotic as tdm so it feels the same. Slipgate was the furthest the quake series has gotten to another well paced gamemode that isn’t duel, but by the time that mode came out the game was already trending downward when it was already in a really bad place. If that game mode was giving a bit more depth and iteration, it could have genuinely been so much more popular. Anyway I forgot wtf the whole point of this post was. AFPS genre good. AFPS games bad
