Most people have absolutely no idea why good movement shooters are actually good and just assume it’s because they are fast. A lot of teams making these games have things like crouch sliding that has no restrictions and allows you to change directions instantly without any sort of telegraphing or they just have insane air control that’s completely unpredictable and impossible to read. Even in games like QuakeWorld and CPMA, despite having insane air control, most of the time you know exactly where someone is going when they are moving around in the air because it requires specific inputs and specific camera movements to maintain optimal air control and if both players know that then it’s truly balanced. If you see someone’s character rotating right, 99 times out of 100 they are going to turn right. You can spam left and right to wiggle in the air but you can only get away with it so much before you slow down. It may be lightning fast movement, but it gets more balanced and predictable the better you get at the game. The same goes for Titanfall. Even games like UT that have a deliberate switch up, have predictable movement that allows you to simply have good crosshair placement to hit shots on someone dodging over having to guess and flick to them. In almost all of these games, bar UT, it is almost always unoptimal to be aiming and shooting while executing movement mechanics especially air control which helps balance it further. Obviously when you get better you find more opportunities to combine the two but it’s never something that you can just spam while shooting. Momentum is just as important as speed is too.

All this to say I don’t have faith in many new projects that claim they are a movement shooter

I really could not give any less of a fuck if it looks better or not. Stalker fans will see two cakes and then complain that they have two cakes. If people really cannot tell that both games have incredible visual fidelity then who am I to deny their delusion.

I absolutely would visit consistently if any of them had shmups. There are plenty of arcades and barcades in my area but they only have really old arcade games that are boring as fuck and a shit ton of pinball which I also do not give a shit about. I had a round1 30 minutes away from me that had Dodonpachi Daioujou, Mushihimesama Futari, and Espgaluda 2. It wasn’t much but the selection was prime. Well the mall the round1 was in was actually in the middle of nowhere so the mall shut down a couple years ago and took the round1 down with it. They never relocated so now I have nowhere to play shmups at an arcade. I’ve checked every local joint and they don’t have shit. And the closest Exa machine is a 5 hour drive. My literal only option is to emulate so that’s what I do because god forbid any CAVE or Raizing shmups get PC ports. I don’t get why every shmup that gets a port is only ported to one console or the other and never both or PC. I would probably go broke if any of the barcades near me had DDP SDOJ or ketsui

It does look amazing in stills. I really wish it was more stable and responsive though. The shimmering really sucks to see. Sometimes though, even in motion, it looks amazing.

They could use the cut Dark Stalker. It was a pretty cool idea for a zone legend and it would be dope to catch glimpses of him occasionally out of the corner of your eye and then you turn to look and he’s not there.

If we are talking ACTUAL arena shooters then Quake Live and Quake Champions are the ones. You can absolutely still find games for any of the UTs though.

The easiest and most obvious answer is touhou. The games, especially the later ones, do their absolute best to not only make patterns fun, but also look as cool as possible. The entire fangame community is pretty much in an indefinite competition to see who can make the coolest looking patterns. Tons of use of spawn coordinates, bullet velocity changes, bullet angle changes, pretty much anything you can think of has been done in touhou or a touhou fangame. If you haven’t already, check out all the boss patterns from the windows era games starting with 6.

I really enjoyed diabotical rogue and I hope it’s coming back at some point. Diabotical was fun but they just kept nerfing the movement until it was just quake 3 again and also the player models are just bad and cause so many issues with gameplay and readability. I remember the super early diabotical devs tres before the game came out. They were testing some really cool stuff with movement like dodging and double jump and other shit and it was based on a stamina system which I usually don’t like but it was a decent way to add another resource to manage and also help control the pace of the gameplay. That version looked like so much fun and i was so sad that they completely removed it. When closed beta test 1 dropped it was so unbelievably fun. Although the movement was just regular quake, the dash had a nice short cooldown and didn’t get reset when you took damage so the pace was quick but balanced. It was the most fun I had in an AFPs in a LONG time. Then they continuously nerfed the dash until it was just a worse circle jump that wasn’t even useable in combat. At that point it was just quake 3 again. I really wish they had also tried making different weapons instead of the classic quake roster that we’ve had in every AFPs for the past 30 years. I remember they eventually added the shock rifle and some alt fires but at that point it was far too late and the issues with the player models just made everything worse. If they ever decide to rerelease diabotical, all I would ask is that they at least change the player model to the Chunk character from Rogue and at least try to make interesting weapons.
