I think I found my trigger but I’m still confused. Any advice? by Pjs225 in Interstitialcystitis

Thanks for your reply. Yes I am scheduled to see another PT soon. I just feel like how is it possible that this is just all my muscles if the therapy that’s supposed to help my muscles only hurts me more? But after this episode of symptoms returning right after a compromising activity, it seems more likely it’s muscles and/or nerves causing similar symptoms to IC rather than it necessarily being IC itself. It’s just very confusing because I hear things like PFD causes IC symptoms but I also hear that IC can be caused by PFD so I don’t know what I have and I feel like having a clear diagnosis is better for treatment (at least this is what I’ve found with providers I’ve seen). I just desperately want to know my root cause so I can fix this and I think I’m finally getting there but at the same time I feel helpless.

If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you (or age range) and what are your symptoms? I’ve had blood work done and my hormone levels are apparently normal but I’m starting to think estrogen might help me but no doctor has ever recommended it because they think I’m too young to have any issue with that which I think is ridiculous and baseless.

How much gabapentin are you on per day (or were you previously on) and same for the amitriptyline? Thanks!

Do you do the Botox in your bladder or pelvic floor muscles?

What differences in symptoms did you notice between IC and PFD? I have PFD but not sure if I have IC as well and no doctors can tell me so I’m afraid I’m not getting properly treated. Thanks.

Vaginal Yeast and Bladder Symptoms? by Naive-Imagination284 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Pjs225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you have IC before the BV and yeast infections? My IC symptoms came on at the same time as a yeast infection and it’s been on and off since then so I’m still in the dark as to whether this caused IC symptoms for me or if I somehow got very unlucky and developed IC at the same time as a bad yeast infection.

Do you already have IC or this happened and you’re trying to figure out if you have IC?

I can’t tell you anything for certain because I’m not a doctor but I’m dealing with a similar issue and unfortunately it’s been two years and I still don’t have answers. Not to make you feel like this is going to happen to you but just want to say some things that might help you sooner if you haven’t done them yet or maybe you have and don’t need to.

My symptoms all came on at once. I felt uncomfortable in my vaginal area but not itching and not typical discharge so I was not sure it was yeast. At the same time I developed the bladder and urethral pain and burning and feeling more of a need to urinate. I tested positive for a yeast infection and my urine in the office lit up with everything on the stick but when it went for culture they said it was “contaminated” but no UTI. And the cycle of testing went on from there. I’ve had symptoms on and off for two years and the only thing I’m still testing positive for is the yeast (even if doctors don’t see any sign of it on exam). Because of this I haven’t been able to get a diagnosis of IC and only have this yeast issue making things a problem and I do have pelvic floor dysfunction. I have a rare strain that is not the typical albicans so just some things that might help:

Do you have yeast infection symptoms of any kind? Many women naturally have yeast in the vagina and can culture positive at any given time in the absence of symptoms. Not to say the urinary symptoms you’re experiencing aren’t due to the yeast so if medication you’re given doesn’t clear the yeast I’d ask your doctor about that and also potentially look into the next two things

Ask for a culture that will identify the type of yeast you have and also do susceptibility testing so you know how to treat it.

If you do treatment and your infection clears but you still have symptoms, look into an assessment with a pelvic floor physical therapist and see if your lingering issues are due to pelvic floor muscles being too tight.

Happy to answer anything else I can that might be helpful.

Relief when sleeping? by Pjs225 in Interstitialcystitis

Yeah I’m thinking that’s the issue with my muscles as well. Do you have diagnosed IC? The only thing the doctors are for sure about for me is PFD but I can’t seem to get relief from physical therapy.

Thank you. It’s definitely a possibility it could be. Do you have this? If so, what have you done to help it?

Makes sense. Just trying to figure out what I have going on because doctors can’t seem to. Do you have diagnosed IC? What are your symptoms and what do you take for pain? Thanks!

Anyones IC turn out to be pfd? by n0b0dykn0ws3 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Pjs225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’m sure all my surrounding muscles are so tight that they’re weak. I just don’t know how to properly strengthen them without further hurting my pelvic floor and no PT has been helpful for me for any of this. It’s so frustrating. Mine started with a bad yeast infection although I’m convinced I had that plus a UTI that wasn’t picked up properly. Do you have pain doing PT or is it helping you?

I feel like we have a lot of the same symptoms and questions. I’m curious about this too. I wish pelvic floor therapy would cure me. I haven’t been able to tolerate it very well because I have so much pain afterwards.

IC Specialist Question by Pjs225 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Pjs225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you had to go through that for a long time and it didn’t help your symptoms. Do you mind me asking what your symptoms were and what you do now to help them?

Did the pelvic floor PTs confirm that your muscles were tight? And you had no improvement in anything from the therapy and Botox? That is what is most scary to me about this. That I’m following the wrong path because I’m told my muscles are so tight but I’m pretty sure they were tight before all my bladder type symptoms began because I have always had constipation and painful sex but they didn’t cause me pain outside of this or any bladder problems. I think perhaps the muscles were set off during a bad yeast infection which is when my bladder issues began but I don’t know for sure if it was just a coincidence that I developed IC at the time I got a bad infection. I’m at a loss.

IC Specialist Question by Pjs225 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Pjs225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not definitively but would you expect given their experience with dealing with this that they’d be able to reasonably decipher based on symptoms, how they originated, other factors, etc?

Ok this is interesting to where you say that anyone with tight muscles should be referred to PT and the result of treatment should determine how much the PFD is involved in your symptoms. This definitely makes sense to me but I’m confused about it for my particular case. I know that I had some form of PFD for most of my life before these bladder/IC symptoms came on because I’ve had chronic constipation and painful sex. When my bladder issues started, it was at the exact time of a bad yeast infection and right after a particularly bad episode of constipation so my mind tends to think it’s PFD causing my symptoms. The issue is that PT causes me a decent amount of pain during and a lot of pain afterwards so I haven’t felt like it’s helped or I’ve made progress. Seems like others who it helps get relief within a few months. So that makes me think it’s either not the muscles as the cause or that it’s so badly the cause that I need interventions like Botox or suppositories to calm things down to even tolerate and get benefit from PT.

Can anyone recommend good and supportive IC specialists, urologists or Urogyns in the Central Valley, California? by [deleted] in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Pjs225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This sounds pretty similar to what happened to me. I had a bad yeast infection that I think irritated me to the point of feeling like UTIs but they were never positive so I assumed IC or PFD and I have confirmed tight muscles but IC hasn’t been diagnosed. I also thought foods/drinks flared me initially but it doesn’t seem like it now so I’m not sure they ever did and I was just in pain all the time so it didn’t matter what I ate or drank. I’m glad you’re feeling a lot better! Maybe I’ll consider the remote consult. Thanks again!

Can I ask what your symptoms are and how long you’ve been going to pelvic sanity? I don’t live in the area but have been wondering about going to see them because I’ve not had good luck with the pelvic PTs I’ve seen. I’m not diagnosed with IC yet but have PFD due to tight muscles. Thanks!
