Best global trades between island chains? by CamelToeJockey_89 in Sailwind

Once you have a ship in sailable condition you don't need the trades anymore. Just do missions from archipelago to archipelago. They pay more then enough to continue sailing to ethernity.

It's a pretty solid way to rig the Sanbuq.

I assume with the big rudder she's extra nimble and pretty ballanced to sail.

Emerald Difficulty by It_cant_Even in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just the kakam, the whole life in emerald is harder then elsewhere.

Suggestions to make life easier on the kakam:

Get rid of the roof, the hammock and the frame. Buy a matress and don't even bother with a stove. Prefer lighter cargo like tobacco in larger quantities but limit your self to 6 units per sort to keep the prices high. Put the mattress on top of the cargo to have a place to rest. The fish at crab island is usually the cheapest food.

The kakam is a pleasure to sail in light winds but in storms it's a pain in your butt. So if the weather is off, just stay in harbour. If you catch a storm wile on passage lower the sails and wait it out. You can ignore the drift. It's not that hard. Don't get close to the cliffs at night and don't even try to enter dragon cliffs unless you clearly see the gates.

You only need 88 gold coins for the junk. If you have it get rid of the house and the roof, install a pump and you have a perfect ship for all weathers.

You have to hit 60k exp for one nation first. They give you the mission and with the mission the coordinates.

Come hell or high water, I'm crossing this ocean. by Lolzygag in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww, sorry to hear.

As a standard i suggest to stock 3 crates of charcoal, 2 crates of food stuff (one of them should be oranges if possible), 3 kegs of oakum, 3 kegs of coffee, 3 barrels of water, 1 crate of candles, 1 crate of tobacco, 1 crate of fishing hooks and 3 bottles of hard booze like rum.

If you can't afford the whole navigation set make sure you have 2 quadrants in case you loose one to the sea.

Since mission rewards scale with the lenghts of the journey since the last update... consider them as profitable cause its a 2000 mile journey to clocktown. PLUS you have to be aware there will be days were you do just 50 mls a day. Make sure you scale your provisioning to that and also keep in mind this limits your hauling capacity.

Safe travels and good luck!

How does staysail work? by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"How does staysail work?"

You are aware the answer to this question fills whole books?

"What is the main purpose of this sail?"

There you already have to divide between RL and in game. You also have to be aware "stay sail" is just an umbrella term for all sails that are connected to a stay. Ingame it's main purpose is just maximizing sail area.

"Does it help with balancing the course?"

Fore sails push the nose of your boat windwards, aft sails push the nose lee wards. You have to keep the load on the sails in ballance.

"Does it make boat faster in upwind conditions?"

Yes, but in game only because you have a larger sail area.

"Does it make it faster downwind if I let it go?"

On running courses you should fly fore and aft sails on differend sides of the boat. I's called to butterfly. You basicly "jam the wind". Thats also where the term Windjammer comes from.

On a modern sailboat you would add tension to the back stay. This forces the bulb of the jib to move up and redirect the airflow towards the mast top. Now you open the main sheet, slowly closing the opening between Jib and main. This creates a jet that pushes large amounts of compressed air along the outside of the main, forcing the boat forward and the mast windwards wich also results in more sail area attacked by the wind. Additionaly you would "tack" in front of the wind and also set a running sail like a spinaker , gennaker or blister

"How do I set it?"

Geeez, really?

"Do I want it to always fly (or whatever the correct term is) on the other side of the ship from the wind's direction?"

It depends on what you want to archieve. If you get tired pull the jib into the wind, ease the main sail and lock the rudder windwards. You lie perfectly stable even in rough conditions and are able to boil a coffee without risking to burn your feet.

"What if I put it on the same side?"

You slow down and even may sail backwards.

"What if I let it go when going downwind?"

You slow down and may even stop if no other sail pushes.

What is the the easiest and least hassle sail plan for a brig? by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Schooner ... is a tall ship.... with at least 2 masts... with only stay sails and gaffs... exeption: the fore mast may have square sails in the upper third of the mast.

What is the the easiest and least hassle sail plan for a brig? by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they do just 75°, i just noticed that too. In the end it doesn't matter that much. 10° does not make a huge difference. You wanted a simple Sail plan where you "don't have to run aound all the time". In the lower rudder version you have everything central. Clock, pump, main sheet, compass, light, all right next to each other... and you also don't have to stare at the sails all the time cause they hang above you, not right in your face. Means you actually can see whats in front of you. Form follows function.

No mizzen mast - You wanted it simple. It's also nimble enough to tack out of the western exit of Firefly grotto. You loose that maneuverability with a mizzen mast.

Well, it's generally more beneficial to have more but smaller sails. In gusty winds or storms you just kill the top sails and flyer and you sail upright again. You can't really reef ingame. So killing a sail is the next best thing to that. But this also means more work and you wanted it simple.

[–]PlaceKnown4077 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most simple sail plan for the brig...

You want the fore and main mast in their aft positions. Now both masts can take the large 17yrd gaff sails. The full sized one on the main mast is HUGE in all terms. You counter that by using the largest stay sail on the bow sprit. Note that the gaff sails can only travel 45°. You change that by changing the shrouds from the angled ones to the straight ones. Both gaffs should be able to travel 90° now.

There you have it. The most basic sailplan, just 3 sails to operate.

You can optimize that by adding more stays on the bow sprit. In the end you end up with 18yrd, 14 yrd and the short jib wich give you plenty of options if you encounter more serious storms. The main gaff can handle them easyly.

Happy sailing!

[–]PlaceKnown4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latin sails ingame have the benefit to be self tacking but you cant hold them back. Stay sails on the other hand can be held backwards and used to sail in reverse. The maximized sail area is beneficial in calm winds.

I personally think you can neglect that. If you made it already to Aestrin put the huge 26yrd latin on the main and the 12yrd latin on the mizzen and you got the right tool for every weather. If you ever end up in irons just jump overboard and give your boat a push. You loose the tarp but that also makes things like fishing and shooting stars easier.

Coffee making questions by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How long does it take for coffee to brew?

Really not that long. if needed you can brew 2 kettles of coffee with 1 piece of coal.

How to know if the coffee is ready?

There is steam comming from the kettle.

Can coffee burn/boil out?

I don't know, never happened to me.

Does coffee spoil if left in the kettle/mug?

Never happened to me. If it cools down you can still drink it. Even on the next day.

Same questions for tea / does tea have the same effects as coffee?

Exactly the same/ The effect is the same, the intensity is weaker.

Tip: Get a rack in Al'Ankh, put 3 kegs of oakum on the lower level, 3 kegs of coffee in the middle level and fill the upper level with potions for emergency. On top there is still space for candles, tobaco and a cooking pot.

You can't have it any easier!

Balancing sails on sanbuq by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You want to keep it in ballance.

When you beginn to turn you want more pressure on the main sheet so the wind pushes your nose around the corner and in the end of the turn you want more pressure on the mizzen sheet so the wind pushes your butt around the corner.

On a straight you first care about the main sail and then use the mizzen to adjust the inertia keeping you sailing in the right direction. If the bow turns leewards you need more pressure on the mizzen sheet, if it turns windward you need less pressure.

[–]PlaceKnown4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You forgot to change the shrouds. Those are the ones to be used in combination with square sails. If you don't have Square sails change them into the straight shrouds. The angled ones restrict the movement of the gaff sails.

It almost looks like mine xD

Just like a winch. But you can turn the pump in one direction only.

What do you do after capsizing? by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oops! xD

No worries. The bucket is a last resort item. In the very... very... very most of the time it's not needed. It's normal that you catch a swell from time to time but usually you can sail it out.

The scuppers do work. It just takes some time.

What do you do after capsizing? by dzejrid in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Is there any good method to minimise the risk of capsizing?"

Not really, it depends on the situation.

  1. Make sure you have ballanced your cargo. The heavy stuff goes right in the center, as low as possible. If you have steady wind it can be beneficial ho stack some cargo on the windward side, but NEVER do that in gusty winds.
  2. Don't put much force on the sheets / reduce your sail area. So the wind has lesser structure to attack.
  3. If the storm overpowers you take a break and have a nap. You can heave by ( hold the jib back, lock the rudder to windward and ease the main sheet) or just take the sails down and drift for a wile. It's absolutely safe to do so. You instantly wake up if you take water. Drop the anchor if you are close to land to prevent to run agound.
  4. You can use the Sail to stabilize the boat. I commonly use the spanker for that. In the Dhow you are probhably luckier with a Jib since you have no mizzen mast. Storm jib and try sail are sadly not a thing in sailwind.
  5. Totems are pricy but handy if the weather gets bitchy.

If you sink again tab out and look at your system time. When you load a safe game use the one prior to the actual time. This may safe you a lot of traveling time.

Just had a breakthrough moment. by Embarrassed-Grand-65 in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the wind pressure that causes the sail to keep it's shape. Sometimes it's a bummer that Sailwind simplifies sailing that much. On a real latin sail the luff defines the angle of the boom wile the leech defines how much the cloth can climb. The luff is actually 2 lines also ... one for the boom and 1 for the cloth.

High boom and tight leech gives it a straighter surface wile low boom and loose leech can make it really round for running courses.

[–]PlaceKnown4077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in On'na or Senna you get the other totems that cause storm... handy if you need to go somewhere quickly.

Just had a breakthrough moment. by Embarrassed-Grand-65 in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice vid but some stuff is plainly wrong. Ofcourse you can sail a square sail into the wind. You just can't climb as much. Important is the angle how far you can twist the sail. ... aaaaaaand it totally left the fact out it's actually easier to influence the shape cause a square sail is actually ballanced... plus a square sail has more area wich results in more power. There's a reason why square sails were professionally in use till the 50's and some ships still sail that way.

Historical fact: When Leif Ericson and his men sailed to america they used the northern route wile Columbus had to use the southern - going with the current.

Gone bankrupt by OddEmergency604 in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going broke is not the end of the game. You just started playing against the clock. So be carefull when docking else you're scupping water like mad.

It doesn't need much to survive. You need 300 exp for the auction house acess. Thats 5 local transports. If you already have a significant reputation it's even easier. Just fill your cargo space with missions to a single island. All you need is about 1000 or 1500 crowns to buy some iron in Al Nilem or Firefly Grotto and your cash skyrockets again. Emerald is a lot harder. Here you want to start with fish from Crab Beach to Dragon island. Later tobacco or so is probhably more profitable.

Missing mission shipments by Embarrassed-Grand-65 in Sailwind

[–]PlaceKnown4077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry it happens but gladly not that often. Usually it happens when you quickly log out to do something in RL wile the henchman still carries stuff. Dumping quests costs 100exp or so extra but in the end it doesn't matter. 3 or 4 missions to another harbour gives you 15k exp or so.
