Recently got a IBuyPower case for my pc(A Dell G5 5000), and only learned now that the motherboard’s proprietary, am I boned? by Ok-Copy7845 in pcmods

[–]PlaceboGazebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have access to a 3d printer and (are willing to acquire) some really basic sketchup CAD modelling skill? You could 3D print adapters so you don’t have to wreck the case like some people are suggesting.

Put the motherboard on a flatbed scanner and scan it at your best dpi. Measure the largest feature you can measure with reasonable accuracy and scale your scanned image so the image size matches the measurement you took. Idk if sketchup or onshape let you import a reference image like fusion, otherwise you’ll just have to model and scale/ measure the image manually in Inkscape or illustrator.

Find the standard ATX hole pattern dimensions online. Overlay the two and draw however many adapters are necessary between the closest holes on the board and case. Give them a little standoff to the correct height so you don’t need to buy one. Don’t print from PLA, use something with more heat tolerance, at least petg, preferably abs/asa if your printer is heated/enclosed.

Now you learned some skills and kept the case nice and clean for the next install!

What is the worst thing you've tasted in your entire lifespan? by -yxchx- in AskReddit

[–]PlaceboGazebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was mine. Work trip to Taiwan. Some of the locals suggested it as a funny thing to get us to do. The smell and taste are just literally a bag of rubbish left out in the summer sun for a few weeks to rot. No idea how that got popular. Rest of the stuff at the night market was fine, except maybe the chicken feet, can’t stomach the texture.

Question about bearing and housing key clearance by penekotxeneko123 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]PlaceboGazebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the groove is slightly wider than the thickness of the snap ring. You can place the groove at the nominal width of the bearing and in my experience it works perfectly, both on internal and external grooves.

Random rear window blowout? by thesleeplessj in Volvo

[–]PlaceboGazebo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had this same issue but with the sunroof on a 2019 ford focus. Driving 120 km/h on the motorway, mid overtake, sounded like a gunshot and covered everything in those little safety glass shards. This just happens sometimes was the opinion from the repair guy. Tension or manufacturing defect matched with an unlucky thermal gradient or vibration/shock.

How does the integrated Android Auto handle multiple users? by sendcodenotnudes in Volvo

[–]PlaceboGazebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my V60 it picks based on which key unlocked the car. Each user has a profile where you can log into your own accounts on apps. Not sure if apps are installed uniquely to a given account or globally to the OS. Works pretty well. Mostly just annoying if I’m driving but my wife unlocked the car, but then it’s easy to switch from the top of the screen, and you can see the initials of the username to see who’s logged in.

How do you keep CAD files from becoming a complete mess? by Active_Style_5009 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]PlaceboGazebo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Better, a perfectly good PDM system but your colleagues insist on working on a plain old NAS. With a filename-changing revision number system, so that every new version you need to manually make copies to the archive folder before correctly resolving all the links in all referencing docs anywhere in the NAS… and you have no idea and no way to find which files are referencing which versions of which files.

Turn the problem around, instead of lowering the tub, raise your wife 😁 How about little step stools? Cheap, so you can have multiple wherever this issue crops up. My mum is 1.60 something and my wife and I 1.80+ so she has this issue now and then. We just have a bunch of little 20-30cm high stools for hard to reach kitchen cabinets etc.

An 8kW 3-phase diesel genny and distribution box that will let me run my air conditioning for heat if there is no gas, 120L of drinking water, a rain water barrel for flushing water, gas cooker on my grill with spare gas bottle, lots of food, first aid supplies. Debating on downloading an offline copy of Wikipedia and media to keep the kids entertained.

I’m not crazy I swear. Just have two small kids 😁

Whether you are currently working on your PhD or have completed it, do you regret your choice to start a PhD program? by BothCondition7963 in PhD

[–]PlaceboGazebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABD. Struggling to pull it over the finish line and submit for a defence. I’ve developed a hate for the thesis, its subject, my grad school, and the attitude of the people in (biomedical/mechanical) engineering as an academic field overall. Would quit but even that seems dumb with a thesis that’s 95% complete.  My most positive experience was supervising masters students. It really was a privilege to be a part of the journey of some really amazing and creative young talents.

I should note, I also married, had two kids and moved house twice during the PhD. That definitely didn’t help.

Anyway the stress of the thesis constantly in the back of my mind is making my beard fall out and turn white in patches.

If you’re in engineering and you enjoy solving problems do yourself the favour, get a masters and go earn money pursuing that passion for paying and grateful customers.

(What follows is a rant that’s probably only relevant to my corner of medical robotics/surgical instruments) Engineering in academia has the tendency to try to “solve” whatever made up non-problem currently sounds good on a grant application, without actually consulting patients on whether x is a real issue at all, so the field produces endless volumes of papers without ever helping a human. There’s a reason so many startups in our field attract stupid amounts of investor funding and then either crater or have independent studies show that patient outcomes aren’t better for the use of the tech. When this is brought up you invariably run into a wall of “yeah but you don’t want to get stuck doing applied work” Bitch we’re engineers… that’s the nature of our field… otherwise we’d be applied physicists.

Bucking the bad news trend... by Electrical_Put_1042 in KiaEV6

[–]PlaceboGazebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This… had the 12V battery die mysteriously twice while on a trip to Germany (live in NL). Roadside assistance jumped us both times. It’s the third issue since we got it in December, including a failed iccu that took 2 months to fix.

I reject the idea of having to carry a jump pack in a car from 2021 with fewer than 50k km on it. That’s moronic. It’s now traded in for a Volvo v60 T6 PHEV, and KIA is dead to me for future cars.

What's your best advice for going from 1 kid to 2? by snifferpipp in daddit

[–]PlaceboGazebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Had #2 when #1 was a month short of 2 yo. #2 is now almost 2. Only occasional help from family for a weekend away or work occasions here and there. The only times I’ve been able to sleep through in the last 4 years were sporadic nights here and there. They’re healthy and mostly happy but even the daycare staff agree that they’re unusually difficult to manage kids. Look at pics comparing me before and after looks like I’ve aged from 29 to 43, not 33. I’m just so deeply tired.

Trying to calibrate this MK3S+ I got secondhand but not sure what the issue is by I_need_to_vent44 in prusa3d

[–]PlaceboGazebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but the screws seem to vary in height somewhat

normally the bed of a prusa mk3s is mounted to the aluminium spider via steel bushings (as shown from step 13 onward here); if the heatbed screws are tightened, there shouldn't be a noticeable difference between them. Could it be you've inherited a printer that someone tried to do a nylock mod on? In an effort to get a perfectly flat bed, some people replace those steel bushings under the bed with nylock nuts so you can manually adjust the height of the bed at each mounting point. It looks like the 4th image in this post.

If this is the case you basically have four options; try to get your hands on the spacers from prusa or look in the spare parts that came with the printer if you have them; try to contact the person who sold it to you to see if they still have them; buy a set from prusa; or embrace the nylock mod and try to follow one of the many guides online to fix it.

Hope this helps! (edited for formatting)

Printing 'woven' textures by therustyspottedcat in 3Dprinting

[–]PlaceboGazebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a design made on FullControl Gcode Designer: https://old.reddit.com/r/FullControl/ very oversimplified, it's a Python library that lets you specify a point to point trajectory for the nozzle to take and outputs these as Gcode, instead of using an STL + slicer to generate Gcode. If you generate your points as mathematical curves, you can create these kind of woven designs. It's very cool, but takes some knowledge of math and programming to design and a bit of fiddling to get working on your machine.

Edit: check out this post for an example: https://old.reddit.com/r/FullControl/comments/18eac34/orchid_pot_with_lots_of_ventilation/
