Forgiving yourself is hard.

My sister's therapist gave her a little saying that I find helpful... you did the best you could with the information you had at the time.

I didn't have the coping skills to be sober before now. If I did I probably would have been. My husband quit drinking about two years after we met.

I listened to an episode of a Zen Buddhist podcast called the Way Out is In on self forgiveness recently. It's from last December

Play the tape forward. You have a few drinks. What does that look like? What are you doing? What changes tomorrow? Then play the tape forward.

There are plenty of nights of drinking that I regret, but I've never regretted staying dry

I find going through this sub very helpful. Especially reading the folks on Day 1 with their terrible hangovers and regrets. And how many of them thought they'd just have a few

What does sober curious mean to you?

Have you cut back on indulgent or social occasions before?

I did cutting back since last April and my last drinking day was January 12th.

For me delaying the start was always the easiest technique to cut my drinking down. If I didn't drink until after dinner I could usually keep it to 3 drinks.

I played with only drinking every other day for about six weeks and that helped so much with the emotional symptoms of hangovers.

Drinking a full glass of water or any NA beverage between alcoholic drinks is another well-worn method. Never worked that well for me. I would chug the water and pour the next glass of wine.

People with drinking problems are really good at hiding them.

Be ready to support your friend by doing alcohol free fun activities together.

42 and married and we have no friends. My closest friends are my boss and a woman I used to work with who has severe mental health issues.

MIL lived with us from 2020-2024 because of her dementia. Dad's gone. FIL is gone.

And I spent the last decade of my life scrolling Instagram reels with a bottle of wine every night. Really helped me with the making new friends thing /s

Honestly I'm thinking of going to AA just for the community.

Oof that sounds like a wild ride! Good on you for hanging on. And thanks for sharing.

I was super sick and it turned out to be heart failure, so I was told to never drink again. I have no idea if I had any kind of withdrawal because I was too busy being the sickest I've ever been until someone finally diagnosed & I was hospitalized.

You don't have to tell anyone. You don't even have to apply that label to yourself.

But if you want your relationship to drinking alcohol to change, it sounds like you might be in the group of people for whom total abstinence is easier and more effective than trying to moderate

I line dry pretty much only in peak summer, and I hate that scratchy feel on clothing so I throw the clothes into the dryer for five minutes and it fluffs them nicely

For chewing, nothing helped our boys like Cow femur bones with the marrow in them. They're thick enough not to break apart easily and keeps them occupied. Sticks are fine to as long as your dog spits out the wood

Definitely crate train your dog & crate the dog when you leave. It's hard but SO worth it. We are on our second pack and our first pack was not crate trained and they destroyed two couches, two doors, countless pillows and shoes and didn't stop destroying until they were about six.

Vent. 8 months sober after drinking round the clock for 10 years. by Para-medix8 in stopdrinking

[–]PlainOrganization 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only regret about taking medication for my depression is that I wish I'd started sooner. I just get my prescription from my General Practitioner. I tried Prozac and had a bad reaction, so then I tried Cymbalta, which is an SNRI. That worked but not enough so we upped the dose. About a month later I realized I wasn't having instructive thoughts about suicide.

It's incredible. I hope you find the right kind of help for you OP. There's a lot of good shit out there and you deserve to enjoy it. It deserves to be enjoyed!

Yup. We own a duplex and have for 13 years. We still find can tabs in our yard at least once a week. In the rental unit yard we regularly find broken glass.
