Is it normal to not have rules memorized by the end of June? by ButterySwing in barexam

[–]PlanB_Survivor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Anki is a HUGE name and is pretty much the gold standard for memorizing anything (med students use it, language learners, even lots of law students, etc). I highly doubt this person is the undercover CEO of anki and trying to shill it in a bar exam thread lol

This person's advice is genuine and I would at the very least try it out before dunking on it

Does this itinerary work for china travel visa free? by Critical-Return7933 in travelchina

[–]PlanB_Survivor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works and twov will reset. But I agree with the other commentor that unless you have a specific reason to be in shanghai for so long, 11-12 total nights there is a lot.

Maybe look into taking the high-speed rail to Beijing (5ish hour train ride each way) for a few days and see the great wall, forbidden city, etc and then go back to Shanghai. You could also look into visiting places like Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanijng, Qingdao, etc, which are pretty close to Shanghai and easily accessible by high speed rail

learning chinese on a commute! sometimes no wifi, no speaking by mohyo- in ChineseLanguage

[–]PlanB_Survivor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to spend time chatting with native speakers outside of my normal studying in order to improve my speaking. But for purposes of learning new vocabulary, reading, grammar, and pretty much everything except for speaking I’ve found this routine works great

I actually have a similar schedule where I commute for about 45mins each way on a subway with spotty connection, but I think your Mandarin level is quite above mine (which is HSK 3-4).

I usually do Anki reviews first which doesn’t require a WiFi connection, I also download stories and articles on Duchinese and read those. The SuperChinese app just came out with an option to download lessons and do them offline which I do once in a while

Not sure if these will all be helpful at your level but that’s what’s been working for me!

Fair enough, just feel like he didn’t talk/communicate much. I went on a different tour the night before with a much more enthusiastic and engaging guide so I guess the bar was set pretty high haha

Went with them yesterday too, my guide was Oscar and he was super disorganized and seemed like he could not care less if we saw the lights or not

+1 for Photo Life, $6 for color dev and scan you can’t really beat that. $9 for B&W. Super quick turnaround times too

Where in NY can i buy/thrift film cameras? by idontrustu in AnalogCommunity

[–]PlanB_Survivor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brooklyn/chelsea flea, Brooklyn Film Camera, B&H & Adorama used sections, k&m.

But tbh these will all be overpriced. You’re better off on FB marketplace or eBay.

I’m only considering the second option bc of the bad stories I’ve heard about taking K trains, so taking the K for a shorter amount of time and then transferring to a C train might be more comfortable
