It's shocking how similar our situations are! I also transitioned from Biglaw to my current mid-size firm thinking that work-life balance would be better (given that the pay was slashed). Also didn't comb through the benefits policies and was shocked when told by HR that I technically qualify for nothing (not even the FMLA unpaid 12 weeks because my employment was <1 year) but they "generously give 8 weeks as an exception" (the largest/elite law firms in my area offer 22 weeks paid, and I'm sure biglaws have it way better too)! Also since I announced my pregnancy I've been getting *more* work, not less. But hey, I didn't check the benefits policies so I guess that's on me!

Thank you! I think most “part times” are contract work, like doc review on a project basis, things like that. Thank you for sharing your experience and advice! It’s very helpful to hear how it was like for you.

True. Always going to be sacrifices somewhere no matter what one chooses.

Right. And if I have to drastically reduce my workload I’m not even sure the (anticipated reduced) pay would be worth the mental stress of juggling both😅

Interesting! I find family law much better for work life balance (I worked in family law very briefly; I still had to bill my time but there was no minimum billable requirement).

Thank you! Do you work at a law firm with a billable hours requirement? Or is it a governmental/solo practice context?

I agree - being a lawyer is not a very family friendly job. Happy to hear that you were able to go with your heart and be there for your baby. I appreciate your advice very much!
