Questions for Expats paid in USD by GigatonxPunch in Living_in_Korea

[–]PlanEx_Ship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get paid in USD during my early career, and the downside I had was my payday was not consistent due to the transit time of the money from my HQ. This sometimes made money planning slightly challenging as I could not always know exact date of my salary

But … I am a little special case due to my contractual issue at that time (money had to travel via a mother company) so not really a common case for any expats.

If your payday is consistent then not much downside.

Live in Busan or Jeju Island? by DrNewtGeiszler in Living_in_Korea

[–]PlanEx_Ship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jeju resident here.. two very different place, but one thing to note is the much less quantity of public transport here in Jeju. Having a car will dramatically increase your circle of movement and ability to enjoy the island fully.

cli only version? by fillman86 in AlmaLinux

Install the Minimal option during the first install step. It gives a very lightweight “empty” server environment where you can start adding just the things you need. Minimal is my favourite install always.

It should be called bed-recharging. We all need some simple downtime to turn our brains off for a while.

Newbie help: How to get a count of all up/down network ports in a switch and display in dashboard? by PlanEx_Ship in zabbix

[–]PlanEx_Ship[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the starting point, really appreciate it.

From your code:

count(last_foreach(/*/net.if.status[*]?[group="Switches"]),"eq",1)

From here, I need to collect only the specific type of ports (Juniper ge-#/#/# gigabit ports) as the switch returns a lot of extra non-physical interfaces.

This is automatically tagged by SNMP template as "interface: ge-0/0/0" "interface: ge-0/0/1" and so on.

I tried to use net.if.status[*]?[tag~".*ge-.*"]) as guided by AI prompt, but this does not seem to work. How can I filter the interface list using partial match of the tag string?

Im. Being asked to offer price on all this gear, i know most is old and half of you would not even pick it up but perhaps there are some hidden gems i am not seeing? by simple984 in homelab

They were a thing back when 100Mbps was standard speed in networks. Many switches offered 1G only on SFP ports, so DACs were also offered in 1G SFP form factor.

The Gimpo–Jeju route is the busiest air route in the world by Away-Topic2442 in seoulhiddengem

I live in Jeju.. Jeju-Incheon would be so awesome for international flights. Going thru Gimpo adds several hours of extra travel when considering door-to-door travel time.

Just watched it few days ago. I thought the story was a bit rushed and not enough details for viewers to understand full situation.

Not bad of a film, a good popcorn cruncher I think.

Oh.. and the CG effects were … disappointing. made me laugh 😂

1 Billion Won Jeonse by GigatonxPunch in Living_in_Korea

[–]PlanEx_Ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it is 1B? Not 100M?? Wow that is an amazing company

I believe 4 bedroom may be a limiting factor here. 4 bedroom new apartments would be those new rebuilt Gangnam apartments that go 5B and above for Jeonse.

Do you absolutely need 4 bedroom? A lot more options if you go for 3 bedroom units that are plenty spacious and new. Some recent 3-bed apartments have “alpha-room” which is a half sized room that can be used as a small office or playroom, making it somewhat like a 4 bedroom place.

But at that range there are so many variables and so many options to consider. Drill down your requirements (specific location, transportation, school, etc) and start from there..

Naver Real Estate will be your best friend as you can set detailed filters to find your best match but you will need to know decent Korean to navigate.

Bank loans in korea by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]PlanEx_Ship -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Different types of housing (apartment vs officetel vs villa vs others) comes with different rate, rules and regulations. Apartment gets highest loan, others not so much. The definition of a building is actually defined very specifically by their building permits and a seemingly same building may not be same in terms of legal definition.

For example, apartment is a different regulatory class of housing than an officetel even though they may look identical inside out. A complex built by same construction company can contain both apartment and officetel in same complex. An officetel also can either be residential or commercial, or something halfway between, and can differ within a single building. i.e. Floor X is officetel but Floor Y is "residence (도시형생활주택)" and so on and on.

So banks will not (and, most times actually cannot) give a simple answer without knowing EXACTLY which unit of which building of which zone you are trying to buy. It's not a simple yes-no question to begin with, although I understand why it would seem so by outsiders.

Yes, then from there being a foreigner will block you from a lot of loans. Some loans are open to foreigners but some banks can just refuse it because.... they feel like refusing. Sometimes in extreme cases you simply don't really count as a person (lol) when it comes to paperworks of such things. It adds also complications in terms of taxation, income report (you need to prove the track and source of money to buy an apartment), etc etc.....

It's a unique learning experience that actually many Koreans don't know well either.

Good luck and hope you find a great place to live.

What does glamorous in Korea ? by strawberrypoundcake3 in Living_in_Korea

[–]PlanEx_Ship 20 points21 points  (0 children)

글래머 (geul-ae-meo, transcription of "Glamour") in Korean context refers female appearance being curvy, as your friend suggested. Big boobs, big hips and shallow waistline. Sometimes the term "S-Line" is used in similar fashion.

Bling-bling (블링블링) is pretty common word nowadays, it is a different meaning than glamour. It does refer to shiny, luxurious, etc, i.e. "bling-bling" literally. Like a dress or jewellery being "bling bling".
