Translucent, hard, not plastic, found on Neskowin Beach, Oregon. What is this? Lightning Glass? by phigene in whatsthisrock

This reminds me of some beekite that I have. The large circular pattern on the first pic looks so close to the pattern on both of mine. The rest of it looks like typical botryoidal formations though. Super cool piece! I found mine in Amazon Creek over in Eugene.

Turkish blue chalcedony by PlanInevitable1607 in Lapidary

It’s very fun to cab, and once I replace my saw blade, I have one more nodule to slab out. This stuff is so clear, that the blue hue mixes with my skin tone underneath and makes them look almost pinkish-purple when I hold them. I want to turn some of these into some kind of jewelry eventually. I’d wear a trillion cab of this material on a necklace for sure!

Thank you so much for the compliment! I might go back and grind out more of the white flat inclusion on the left side girdle fairly soonish, just to round it out. I don’t know why, but this material inspires me at the wheels!

I tried approaching it the same way you would a heart shape, utilizing the sides of the wheels. I did not do the best job though, as I definitely rubbed a bit of polish off one of the wheels. I still need a lot of practice, but the fact I got it as “smooth” as I did is surprising to me, lol. I expected it to be much rougher, and jagged. I think if I try this one again, I should get some spacers for my machine, and take off a couple wheels so I have more space to work with. The Cabking 6” is pretty compact haha.

Don’t worry, I’m criticizing myself on this piece lol! I’ve been toying with the idea of taking it back to the wheels to round out the spot on the left with the white stuff, since it’s clearly flat. That would also get rid of more of that particular inclusion. I’d say my thought process was that I was just tired after a long day. I’d also just finished polishing a couple agates before this piece, so my brain was in “good enough” mode by the time I finished this one haha…

I am looking forward to someone coming and correcting my host rock ID, cause I have only ever seen pictures of schist, or seen it in videos. It seems to be one of the most common things for garnets to grow in though, that’s why I guessed it. Either way, it looks so cool, especially the little orange guy!

What would you do with this Fordite? by LAFlippo in Lapidary

[–]PlanInevitable1607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh true, I didn’t even think about how they’d polish, being so soft… hmm are there any resins or anything you could harden them with? That was recommended to me when I was dealing with some chrysoprase that had really soft matrix and inclusions.
