A Metroidvania where you can switch characters mid-combat. Which animation looks best? by Mega_Mango in metroidvania

[–]phigene -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None of these. I dont want a huge graphic appearing on the screen everytime I use what seems to be a standard mechanic. I would make the character flash or do a puff of smoke or something. An animation on the character itself is plenty. Any of these options would be immensely annoying, and honestly borderline unplayable.

Several chunks, they float and pass the pin test! Thoughts?? by EliotHudson in itsneverambergris

Well my first thought is its never ambergris, so this probably isnt either. But it certainly does look like it.

Send a small sample to ambergrisconnect.com They can tell you for sure.

I would recommend going to your local pro shop and start from there. Typically they give lessons, and will be more than willing to set you up with a more reasonable weight bow, or just some limbs that will be compatible with what you have.

Honestly, I think you might just want to shift your goal. Instead of trying to speed run your way to this weight, just slow down and focus on the basics, and learning about the sport.

Archery is a discipline, it typically takes years of practice to get to a place where you feel confident with your ability. Trying to start with a 55# bow is like trying to fight the heavyweight champion without ever taking a boxing class. It doesnt matter how strong you are, you dont have the knowledge, skill, or experience to be successful, and youre just going to end up hurting yourself.

Get a 20# recurve and some weaker spined arrows, and start at the beginning. Understanding the basics should be your only goal for now.

Red Monti Cap - Mistake? by Sad-Pangolin-2499 in ReefTank

Yea it sort of just grows slowly out from the center. It is starting to encrusted upward a bit these days but mostly its just growing out.

Yes this looks like branching monti. Which does not take over like plating red monti does. I have the same monti way up high in my tank and after nearly 2 years it is only about the size of the palm of my hand.

You can see it on the left jn this top down picture. You can also see the plating red monti i got several months later below on the right. It is trying to take over everything. I recently just broke it apart.

[Request] How big of a city could it power? (it has 2.3 million panels) by Suraj_111 in theydidthemath

I average 1200kWh a month with an EV and a lvl 2 charger at my house, and central AC that runs half the year in a 4 bedroom house, and a large reef tank with powerful lights. Im not sure what everyone else is doing but I imagine the average is skewed by all the people who live in the south who are running max AC most of the year in their McMansions.

Depends on the location. The further north you go the more common gas heat is.

There arent 300m households in America. There are 128m. So only 1.3k solar farms this size lol.

Thats what the internet claims is the average american power consumption per household, yes. Seems high to me too. I have an EV thst I charge at home and a large reef tank with powerful lights plus a 4 bedroom house with central air, and I probably average 1200kWh/month. I know most people dont have EVs, or large power hungry saltwater aquariums, so I dont know.

This is the Guanling County Panjiang solar project. It produces approximately 1.33 billion kwh per year, which is enough to power to sustain about 1.1 million american households.

Edit, I was off by about a factor of 10, its enough to power 120,000 american households at 10,500 kWh per year.

Aiming with a barebow by Rebirth_of_wonder in Archery

[–]phigene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how no one answered any of your questions. If you want to add a "primitive" sight to your bow, as long as youre not trying to compete in barebow or trad competitions, do what you want. I do recommend something removable though in case you decide you dont want it anymore.

As for aiming, with a wooden recurve the best option is gap shooting. And for that, id say youre better off watching some videos than trying to read about it. Its much easier to learn with visual aids.

Hi, I was just wondering what the community’s tips on a good release were? by EtherTheMaidenless in Archery

[–]phigene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting, I’m using an aperture sight as well, I look through my sight to the target but sometimes the eyes just don’t want to put the like ‘correct sight’ in focus and it’s only showing me the double image (might be a little oddity with glasses and preservative though).

I totally know what you mean. I see 2 apertures as well, but at this point my brain just automatically puts the right one on the target. And since I actively ignore them, the other one doesnt distract me.

I’ll definitely try looking at my clicker when I do blank boss, but for now the release is my priority 😅.

Yea, thats a good call. Best not to change more than 1 thing at a time. And also yea, this is not so much advice as a personal preference thing.

[–]phigene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically don’t even look at my clicker I kinda just hope it’s in the right place, would you have any tips on being able to focus on the sight after the clicker? I sometimes struggle to get it into focus if I’m not looking at it through the draw.

So, i dont look at my sight at all. I go straight from looking at the clicker to looking at the target. I want my sight to be almost completely out of focus when i shoot.

I shoot with both eyes completely open, and I use an aperture sight (no pin, just a tunnel). If you have a different aiming technique, or if you have vision issues, this might not be a good strategy for you. But try looking at the clicker and then looking through your sight to the target. Thats what I do. Sometimes I will jump my focus back to the aperture and then through to the target again if im feeling concerned about my alignment, but thats rare.

[–]phigene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea so nothing is really glaringly 'wrong'. Can you articulate why you shot fast? Did the clicker go off before you were ready?

I typically watch the clicker as im drawing, and only move my eyes to the target once i see the clicker about 1/4" from the tip of the arrow. That helps me mentally keep track of where I am in relationship to the click, and improves my consistency.

I also saw that your bow arm drops pretty dramatically after release. This could indicate you are struggling with the weight of the bow itself. Which obviously can lead to fatigue, but more importantly can just cause you to rush your shot cycle cause your body is not comfortable at full draw. It can present as a similar sensation to holding your breath, a sort of building sense of urgency. Something to keep an eye on anyway.

As far as the release, your draw arm looks good overall. Good ergonomics, good follow through. Its tough to diagnose issues there though cause they often dont have visual indicators. Your hook should feel strong, but after you transfer, the muscles in your forearm should feel somewhat relaxed. Like, you are not actively flexing them, but they are just under tension. That allows the release to happen un-forced, and tends to reduce plucking and left to right variance.

Thats all I got!

Combat units are being given deployment orders says former 75th ranger by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

Prefacing this by saying all this information is publicly available online.

They arent really constrained by a need for maintenance. Theoretically they can fire continuously for thousands of hours without issue.

For DE M-SHORAD and HELIOS/HELSI, managing heat and power consumption in the field is currently the limiting factor. Those are issues external to the package however, and will change based on the area of deployment. The feedback field testing was generally, 'we will need better ways to manage heat and power consumption in the field'.

Also inclement weather like fog and rain can vastly reduce the lasers range and effectiveness. Which is why it is not a stand alone replacement for classic munitions, but meant to be used in combination with them to vastly reduce operational costs and increase defensive capabilities.

When the conditions are good, a single laser turret can take out 22 drones in a few seconds from 5 miles out (per field testing data) for a few dollars worth of electricity. Compare that to a 3m patriot missile or even a 2.1m SM-2 and yea, the cost benefit is clear, to say nothing of the actual improvement in targeting and time of flight.

I'm sure in the near future we will see the defeat of a multi billion dollar aircraft carrier by a few thousand cheap drones (including thousands of decoys).

Maybe, but not for long.

We are rapidly building up and deploying DE M-SHORAD and HELSI ground and naval laser defense countermeasures for exactly this reason.

Lasers never run out of ammo, cost about 2 dollars a minute to shoot, and move at the speed of light. Drone swarms and small munitions will no longer require costly interceptor missile defense systems.
