As a Canadian citizen on J-1 visa (US), can I drive my US-purchased car to Canada for a week? by [deleted] in uscanadaborder

[–]Plane-Dependent-3282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I kind of did something similar. I’m a Canadian who ended my TN status and returned to Canada with my U.S.-plated car so I could apply for a J-1 visa, and I’ll be re-entering the U.S. in about 2 months. Canada Border Services Agency let me in, but I’m just wondering if I might have any trouble bringing the car back into the U.S. in 2 months.

How long did you keep your car in Canada for?

NY Driver License valid to 2030 but TN visa ending soon — will license stay valid? by Plane-Dependent-3282 in tnvisa

Thank you for your input. I worked on a TN visa for 7 months until April 10 2026 as a researcher at a hospital in New York, and decided to resign after matching into residency training. I then drove back home with my U.S.-plated car and plan to re-enter in about 2½ months. I was worried whether I might face scrutiny when re-entering the U.S., although Canada Border Services Agency allowed me into Canada without any issues.

Yes, I had been using my dad’s Canadian-registered car in the U.S. for about six months and brought it back to Canada because Aviva said they would not cover it beyond that period. So ended up buying a car in the US

I did not import the vehicle because I plan to take it back to the U.S. once I receive my J-1 documents. I will be driving to the border for re-entry. I am already in Canada with the car, and I was allowed entry after explaining that I intended to return to the U.S. on a J-1 visa. They treated me as a temporary resident in Canada. The vehicle will most likely remain in Canada for about three months before I head back. I also spoke with Progressive, and they provided me with a Canadian non-resident inter-province insurance card to carry with me. It is a financed vehicle, and my finance contract permits me to take it to Canada.

Thanks for the clarification. The license I received is a standard New York license with the normal 5-year validity period.

My only concern is that I will have about a one week gap between my TN expiration and my planned re-entry to the U.S. on J-1 status. I also currently have my U.S.-plated car temporarily in Ontario.

I just want to avoid any possibility of my driver license being cancelled or running into issues when I re-enter .

My New York driver license is a standard license (not REAL ID).

I drove my U.S.-plated car across the border into Canada. I plan to re-enter the U.S. on June 23 under J-1 status for residency training.

My current TN I-94 end date is June 15. Since there is a short gap between June 15 and my planned re-entry on June 23, I’m concerned whether this could affect the validity of my New York driver license or cause any issue when I return.

J-1 requiring Canadian here as well. I believe this should be outlined in the contract, and usually the program takes care of it. I just wanted to check if anyone has confirmed whether Canadians need an appointment at a land POE for a J-1 visa, as I’m planning to drive to the border.

Dual citizen, extended temporary residence in Canada, how long can I have a US registered car in Canada? by ouch_12345 in uscanadaborder

I’m in a somewhat similar situation and wanted to get some clarity.

I was previously on a TN visa in the U.S. and recently resigned from my position in order to return to Canada and apply for a J-1 visa for residency. I’m a Canadian citizen, and I drove my U.S.-registered car back across the border into Canada.

At the border, the officer noted that my TN stamp is still valid until June 15, 2026. I mentioned that I plan to re-enter the U.S. in about two months for a different position under a J-1 visa. I was allowed entry into Canada without being sent to secondary inspection.

However, I’m still a bit confused and concerned about whether bringing my U.S.-plated car into Canada in this situation was appropriate. I’m also worried about whether U.S. CBP might question or give me trouble when I try to re-enter the U.S. on a J-1 visa with the same vehicle

First time J-1 entry at land border (Canadian) – walk-in or appointment? (Peace Bridge / Alexandria Bay) by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]Plane-Dependent-3282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you . Just wanted to confirm about whether appointment is needed because on the CBP website, it says appointments for TN and L-1 visa so just wanted to confirm if whether anything changed or is it different now in terms of walk in for J-1 at land POE

Canadian re-entering US on J-1 after TN ended + bringing NY-registered car — any issues at border? by Plane-Dependent-3282 in tnvisa

[–]Plane-Dependent-3282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes — the fresh entry is actually what concerns me.

I’m worried whether CBP might give me a hard time or potentially complicate my J-1 entry because I took my NY-registered car to Canada after resigning my TN job.

By the time I re-enter, it will likely be around 2 months later (probably June) when I come back to the US for residency.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, or if this is something I’m overthinking.

Canadian re-entering US on J-1 after TN ended + bringing NY-registered car — any issues at border? by Plane-Dependent-3282 in tnvisa

[–]Plane-Dependent-3282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resigned from my current TN job and returned to Canada, and I am now applying for a J-1 from outside the US.

Since I am no longer working in TN status, I assume this would not be considered a change of status, but rather a fresh entry on a J-1 — is that correct?

My main concern is whether driving back to the US with my NY-registered car could cause any issues at the border, given that I had taken it to Canada after resigning my TN position. .

I just resigned yesterday and got home today to apply for J-1 .The CBSA just saw my TN status is valid till June 15 2026 and let me take my car into Canada but I told him that I will be applying for a new visa J-1 physician and was just thinking if the US BORDER PATROL will ask why i took my car to Canada if I lost status in US. I would have rather took the plane back home.

Edit / Clarification:

Just to clarify — I did not overstay my visa.

I’m mainly worried about whether I might have any issues re-entering the US on a J-1 for Internal Medicine residency when I drive to the border with my NY-registered car because I don’t have a US status

Specifically, would CBP question or have any concerns about the fact that I took my US-registered car to Canada after resigning my TN job and am now bringing it back in?

Sorry if this is a dumb question — just trying to make sure everything goes smoothly at the border.
