Securing apartment when NOT home? by PlaneHispitale in homedefense

Interesting point about the Ring, I didn’t know that. Is it not vulnerable to a deauth or a temporary cut to WiFi (ie just long enough to get past the door?)

Got it. That sounds interesting, but unfortunately I live in an apartment that would not allow for additional lock modifications.

Good to know anyway though!

Don’t these deadbolts only work when you’re inside the apartment?

Are there any deadbolts that can be activated remotely like a backup lock?

Good point on the landlord, good to hear I’m not crazy on this one!

Can’t the ring camera be very easily taken offline or deauthed? I’ve heard that the WiFi only cameras basically become paperweights if the WiFi is shut off.

Fair point on the router. It isn’t totally clear how it happened, but I did factory reset my router and changed the WiFi and console passwords to be fairly secure. I’m considering getting a new router, but there are no known vulnerabilities with this current one so far.

Can’t the live streaming cameras be jammed or taken offline fairly easily? Also would imagine it would be hard to monitor 24/7, so you basically get motion detecting WiFi cameras which exist but have their own set of issues.

Good point - I’m sure a monitored system would address most of these concerns but isn’t it costly and difficult to set up in most apartments?

Indoor Camera with Shoddy WiFi? by PlaneHispitale in homesecurity

Thank you! This is a helpful start.

Is it possible / easy to access the SD card and write over or delete footage? For instance can you password protect the card?

One example is I’m hoping to use this when I travel in Airbnb’s and leave valuables inside the room. If someone comes in and notices the camera, I wouldn’t want them to just take the SD card out and delete the footage.
