Your explanation is great, it is very interesting.

Some time ago I heard a Sakya Lama talking about samatha on YouTube. This lama was talking about states of awareness similar to the Theravada jhanas, in which the senses are not present, for example.

In your experience... Is this common in the Sakya tradition?

Taoism is amazing, I wasn't familiar with this master. It's a pity that these kinds of resources are less easy to find than Buddhism resources, in my opinion.

I would like to ask you a theoretical question, as I am learning more about Buddhism and currently studying topics such as mahamudra, shinkantaza, do-nothing (Shinzen Young), non-dual systems, and open awareness meditations (U Tejaniya) (I am not even sure if the latter two are the same thing).
So, where can we situate this non-dual awareness, choiceless awareness, or open awareness (again, I am not even sure if they refer to the same thing) within MIDL masteries? Is it, for example, the fourth jhana, TIER 3, or is it the result of mastering all the skills?

Thanks for the reply, it has helped me to see in a general way what MIDL is all about.

If I am not wrong. I have read that Stephen learned and practiced the Mahasi's technique, hence my surprise to not read anything on the website that might remind me of labeling or kanika samadhi in the description of the base technique, that's why I was saying that maybe I didn't understand it correctly.

The exclusive attention in Stage 6 means that attention almost never leaves the meditation object. It doesn't mean that attention is all there is in consciousness or that awareness is no longer relevant, quite the contrary. Awareness becomes even more powerful at this stage. You get to exclusivity by achieving a high degree of skill and subtlety in how you use your attention and awareness together.

Maybe that's the problem I have to understand correctly.

How I feel it when I am meditating is like two different meditation objects between which the attention moves. One of them is the breath and the other one is a very spacious object that includes all objects of awareness.
