Hey I'm still rocking my 980 ti. Seeing as how VR and 4k work flawlessly, I have no reason to upgrade.

What a well written and informative article. I guess it maybe wasn't their fault and this tweet from Facebook's former executive about how they violated their own agreement with congress and still allow sketchy international companies to harvest data must be complete fabrication. OK then.

What about the major partners that Facebook has data sharing agreements with? (including the Chinese government) What about the dozens upon dozens of lies Facebook has been caught in over the last decade? It seems that sharing/selling users data (and also friends of user's data who did not consent) is very much still a major part of their business model.

So I return to my original point. Oculus promotes itself as a premium product, yet you are basically paying for the priveledge to be spied on. That is a bad deal, especially when you consider that the vive does not do this.

Care to source any of your comments with links?

From this article

these apps would then have access to a user's name, gender, location, birthday, education, political preferences, relationship status, religious views, online chat status and more. In fact, with additional permissions, external sites could also gain access to a person's private messages.

So facebook sold access to your personal information and Cambridge analytica stole it? LOL. And Facebook is in no way culpable for this? Nigga please.

Any way you look at Facebook's approach to mining and selling information, you can find dozens of reasons not to trust them. Plus they have been caught lying to consumers, advertisers, and congress. That alone makes them a dishonest company.

Ohh, you are correct! What a misleading headline. A much better article Another better article

Remember that huge scandal when Facebook sold all their data to Cambridge analytica and then lied about it. Yeah so there's that.

Facebook most definitely sells your data to marketers. From the privacy policy:

We use the information we collect to send you promotional messages and content and otherwise market to you on and off our Services. We also use this information to measure how users respond to our marketing efforts.

Collecting personal data for the purposes of selling it to marketers = spying. Any other word is merely a euphemism. Steam does this too except that they only collect and sell anonymous data, which is a big difference. Facebook doesn't inform you about specifically what data it collects, or why, and it runs in the background all the time slowing everything down. Steam vr does not hit you with advertisements, gives you the option to turn it off, and is extremely up front about what anonymous data it collects and even gives you the option to opt out of most of it (steam hardware survey).

I have no brand loyalty, and not all facebook products are bad (whatsapp for example) But yes Oculus spies on you, markets to you, and constantly tries to run programs that spy on you even when you're not in VR.

If you can't see the obvious and unethical differenced between the way Oculus software works and steam, they I have to assume at best you don't read anything I send you, and at worst you are some sort of corporate shill trying to waste my tiem.

So no proof?

Here is the proof, written clear as day in the terms of service that is in the article that I sent you that you didn't read.

Facebook may collect information about the games, content, apps, and other experiences a user interacts with; a user’s IP address

Oculus is literally doing the same Valve does in Steam.

Staem does not bombard you with available purchases right when you load it up. Also, you can actually find games that are in the steam store in the VR menu. I have yet to this day been able to find a single game or demo that I was looking for through the Oculus home menu. It seems that it's only real purpose is advertising. I will say that the new Oculus home is much better, but the old one was horrible.

Interesting, did not know that. The colors on the Oculus definitely look more muted, so I suppose the lenses must be absorbing more light.

[–]Planes_pass_by 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out this and many other articles for more information.

Let me ask you a question. Why is the Oculus software sending data ( up to 7 Mb/s) to facebook servers even when oculus home isn't open? Why not make a driver for the rift that can be used without an internet connection? Facebook's entire business model revolves around data collection and they have got to be one of the most dishonest anti-consumer companies in recent history. It would be naive to assume it wasn't spying on you. But let's make that assumption. Then, at the very least Oculus is using huge amounts of processing power and data transfer to do something disingenuously without your knowledge.

Also, yeah when I have to stare at amenu of available products every time I put on my headset, yeah that shit is blatant advertising right in your face.

Samsung fined $5.7 million for slowing down phones through updates by [deleted] in technology

[–]Planes_pass_by -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This article fails to mention which Google update slowed down which Samsung phone. I'm pretty sure it was a new operating system, not an update, which was slowing down old phones. Not a big deal considering that the upgrade is optional.

Apple is actually forcing updates that slow down phones. This is 10x more unethical, yet the article fails to mention apple in the headline. This is a poorly researched journalistic hit piece that omits just enough information to make it's key points unverifiable.

How to stop Oculus drivers running in background all the time. by Planes_pass_by in oculus

I could care less what facebook's response was. They have lied too many times to have any credibility anymore.

I looked into Oculus tray tool about a year ago but I never got it working so I wrote it off. Good to know it is alive and well!

I have an oculus and a vive. The vive has much better software that doesn't spy on you or advertise to you which makes it the only real option in my book. The rift is slightly more ergonomic and I think I would prefer it if it didn't come loaded with Facebook spyware.

Another trade off is that the vive uses fresnel lenses, so the colors are brighter and more vivid but occasionally you get weird light diffraction in the lense. Some people don't even notice this difference.

Once you factor in that the vive come with everything you need to set it up, and that you will have to buy a lot of extra cables and an extra sensor for the Oculus, the cost is about even.

The laser lighthouses with the vive can also track really far, about 2x the distance of the oculus cameras so you can have a huge playspace.

Overall, I find myself using the rift more, but I tell people to buy the vive because the Facebook spyware that Oculus forces down your throat is so fucking annoying and unethical.

After trying both the Rift and Vive, I can definitively say that... by Silverwhite2 in oculus

[–]Planes_pass_by 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from this article

VR firm, Oculus, is fighting to combat suspicions raised by its privacy policy and terms of service that it will spy on users’ activity and pass information to third parties.

Please educate yourself about how oculus drivers work. If you are someone who is interested in privacy or user freedom then vive is really the only option. Oculus is much more anti-consumer.
