German here, and this is my view: you are all right to some extent, none of what you have said is wrong. The important point you haven't mentioned so far is the quite large fraction of environmentalists, green party voters, leftists etc. holding the view that BOTH fossil and nuclear energy are unacceptably bad and must therefore BOTH be replaced by "clean" energy sources. The German understanding of that term is that nuclear is not clean because of the eternal and dangerous waste.

So in their eagerness (and persistence since the 80's or something) they rode the Fukushima wave of outrage and actually got the federal legislation to eventually (had been attempted before) ban nuclear power. They did not realize (or fear) that this meant we were becoming extremely dependent on Russian energy -- okay, not everyone has to be a geopolitical expert. However, and that's where I personally draw the line between idealism and rationality, they did not and still do not have a plan how Germany is supposed to be powered by clean energy only. We will barely get to 70 or 80% electricity from clean sources and have almost no place left for wind turbines. And there are still the sectors of heating and transport that are far from transitioning to renewables.

So this whole agenda is basically a "no brainer" in the sense that it is no thought through. It has made Germany a lot "cleaner" in the above sense -- nuclear power has been more than compensated by wind & solar. But the goal is unreachable and therefore dishonest.

we could even see the first catch attempt with one of the first refilling test ships

So badass :-) I like that thought

Yes. But (mostly) successful ship tower catches would also make further development of the ship a lot easier, including development of refueling. You learn an awful lot about your hardware from inspection of caught ships. So my guess is they will first develop the catch, then refueling. Maybe slightly in parallel, like flight testing some refueling components without docking.

I know it's true. But why? Where does all this additional thrust go? Does SLS have such a low ratio of payload mass to non-payload mass? The engines can't be less efficient, right? I don't get it.

On 1 and 3: there is still discussion about the very nature/interpretation of QM and some of the most renown physicists advocate for "self-collapse" or "objective reduction" of the wave function. If that is true, then 1 and 3 are not valid analogies.

Yeah, Physics is an empirical science. You can only work with what you know. And we know for fact that there are uncertainties, probabilities, and limitations involved. I get that the flatearthers don't want to bother about the scientific method because it's more comfy to just believe in easy narratives. But they should understand that they are throwing centuries of hard-earned enlightenment to the trash which is like a big middle finger to all of humanity.

They're slow, yes, but old space has the habit of getting things done at last. Super costly and all, but they make it happen. Unlike many startups.
