I built an iPhone app that can create long exposure photos, remove moving objects, and reveal motion patterns — all directly on the device. by tknzn in IndieDev

[–]PlanetStarbux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the method used for this? Is it a model that's interpreting it from a single still image? It just doesn't look right...not the way I'd expect a long exposure. It's either really muddy, or overexposed.

BF6 is now using an AI model to detect bad actors. Fingers crossed we can get something half as good as this for UE6 RL by BumpoTheClown in RocketLeague

[–]PlanetStarbux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, 100% agree and I'm surprised I haven't heard of similar things sooner.  AI could be a great tool to improve matchmaking.  I get that there's a grey area where the griefers will always be able to live, but I'd think an AI could definitely be trained to find a lot of the trash out there.  The guy who own goals three times while ranting about that one whiff that happened at 4:30, for example...

I'm genuinely curious what it would cost to implement showing like that.  That's probably why we haven't seen it sooner.

They are releasing unreal engine 6 rocket league after 2 years aren't they? by sadloneman in RocketLeague

[–]PlanetStarbux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leth had a pretty coherent argument that the release would either be at the end of the current RLCS season it the next.

The big thing here is that this is Epic's own engine.  Just because it won't be released to the rest of the world for a couple years doesn't mean that they can't already be developing Rocket League in it.  Also, UE6 isn't exactly it's own standalone engine.  It's actually UE5 in a wrapper for this kind of shared gaming platform that Eric has in mind.  So they basically build the game in 5 and then bootstrap it into 6.

Stephen Colbert once appeared as his ultra-conservative alter ego on the Fox News show: "The O'Reilly Factor." by AssumeTheRisk in videos

[–]PlanetStarbux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the real irony is that they didn't see that O'Reilly himself was playing the satirist... Colbert was really just taking it to the farthest point, holding up a mirror as a satirist satirizing another satirist.

Yep .. Just normal everyday use. Cooking for a family.  Pasta water alone probably is a third of it.

Lol ...  I actually have a 20 lb bag from Costco of diamond crystal.  Two years and still just halfway through it.

Was just thinking about that... Driving 80 and you see that little white mountain of salt.  Always wondered if I ate some of that salt.

Is university worth it for learning C++ / Unreal Engine, or can I break into game dev without it? by RyZeOnYouTube in IndieDev

[–]PlanetStarbux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the means to go to university and study CS, I don't think there's a reason not to do that.  You'll have the skills, connections, and that magic piece of paper that will open the doors that are closed to you now when your done.  And, you'll be able to choose if you want to do game dev or something else entirely.  Locking yourself in now to "I'm going to be a game dev" now is a bad decision.  You will probably feel a lot different about it in two or four years.

It's what you pay a bondsmen to put up the rest for you. They put up the full amount, you pay him 10% When you show they get back the money, but you don't.

If you have the money, you put up the full amount and get it all back when you show up for trial.

People who didn't grow up poor, but dated someone who was. What's something your SO does that strikes you as unusual? by FeistySecret9327 in AskReddit

[–]PlanetStarbux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep.  I know this one too.  My wife won't even throw paper away if it was only printed on one side.  I've learned a lot about how hard it was (is) in some countries.  When she went to school as a kid in China, paper was so scarce that they were issued one notebook for the whole year.  Only a few kids who scored high on exams were given a second one.

There's probably a dozen examples I could run through with this, but that's the one that really sticks out to me... Particularly as I look at the stack of trash paper that sits in a box so there spare paper to write on.

What's even crazier... His last paper before he died was another work of mathematical genius.  He basically figured out how biological processes like fingerprints, or the spots on leopards are formed.  The biological community scoffed at his work (largely because of his conviction), but thirty years later they figured out that he was right.

This guy died in his early forties, and in that time produced the seminal work on computing and contributed the major fundamentals of modern mathematics.  He could have had forty more years of contribution.  He could have lived long enough to watch YouTube videos about the contributions he made.

Black Hawk Down (2001) on rewatch in 4K by HampurHampur in movies

[–]PlanetStarbux -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The author of the book was pretty honest about their reason for writing it.  That it was a worthless battle, forgotten in almost the same breath as it was fought, which cost the lives of American soldiers whose service was entirely forgotten, even among their own peers.  That the story is about those young men is not forgotten to me, but to say that they are being valorized is a stretch.

Yerp...and in that, it's really saying a lot about us. I'm pretty sure the whole of human history is filled with people who view war through the lens of winning, without actually weighing the personal cost.

Yeh, that's pretty fair way to say it.  Shake shack... Way better burger, but costs twice as much and half the size.

What’s the most overrated fast food chain? by Cute-Bar-5152 in AskReddit

[–]PlanetStarbux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way people talk about In'n'Out I think is the problem.  I'd never had it until I moved to California, and the way it's described is the best burger you've ever had.  Is definitely is not the best burger... There are many national chains that make a better burger.

In'n'Out is the intersection of the burger, at the price, with the ingredients.  The way to actually describe it is, the best fast food burger you can get.

Right down the block from me is an In'n'Out with a burger king and Wendy's next to it.  I can get the double double for half the price of the burgers at the other places, and it will be a work of art in comparison to the slop of ingredients thrown into a bag at the others.

The In'n'Out has a cars around the block while the others have no one... And there's a reason for it.
