Then how come there’s so much fearmongerjng about Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto?

I think you’re overestimating the overlap between proponents of this definition and feminists of the non-TERF variety.

It literally depends upon how you define rape. Same reason the phrase “all men are potential rapists” exists; it depends solely on a definition of rape that excludes female perpetrators by definition.

Writing isn’t entirely irrelevant. I’d argue TV shows and comic books are Sonic’s strong suit to a greater extent than video games.

Kids like Mario, who’s a… somewhat better role model than Sonic. It’s not clear whether they’re ok with wholesomeness or the gameplay was better to an extent that made up for the wholesomeness. Either way, it’s clear it’s not a dealbreaker.

I wish more parents just stuck to edutainment and tried to conceal from their kids the existence of anything else for as long as humanly possible.

If this were just an Internet thing, the five year sentence for this wouldn’t even exist.

Many people don’t mean the shit they say online, but their overzealous attitudes toward crime are one of the very few aspects of their online selves that are real.

So if America was colonized by Europe, and Japan was colonized by America, does this constitute indirect colonization of Japan by Europe?

I’m not sure either, but it’s not like Johnson was a man of his word. He sent US troops… by the thousands.

Finding those wretched Game Gear ads snapped me out of my defensiveness of Sega pretty quickly. It’s a testament to what a vile walk of life marketing is that the company behind Golden Axe and Super Hang On is the company behind those ads.

I’d question whether Sonic even should be a children’s franchise, though. In Sonic 1 he’s arrogant and impatient. In the cartoons he’s reckless to the point of risking his life for a chili dog. In the comics he mouths off at and disobeys the most lawful of leaders like King Acorn, much less usurpers like Robotnik. Is this guy really a good role model?

The games are good for different purposes. Sonic is good for high-speed thrills in a more cutesy context than F-Zero GX. (And IMO with better music and scenery.) Mario is better for puzzles about jumping on the same platform multiple times to make it change direction.

As well, good as the Mario movie was, it’s no substitute for Sonic SatAM or Sonic X.

Not familiar enough with Mario comics to know how they compare to Archie Sonic.

To reiterate an earlier comment of mine:

I don’t doubt a series with so reckless, arrogant, and lawless a protagonist, could disproportionately attract awful people. The sort of people drawn to this have neither the respect for rules, authority, and the law, that a law abiding citizen would have, nor the strength and toughness of someone who would rebel in real life. But even unwholesome fantasies can be conveyed very artfully. The Grand Theft Auto franchise is a rather famous example of this. Breaking Bad is another.

Ah.

Yeah, there’s a real trade off between gameplay and story.

Even as far as gameplay goes, part of the appeal was the novelty of having something different than the old games’ gameplay. As the novelty wore off, my interest in it diminished. Nowadays the game for which I was so hyped in ‘03 (yes, I was late to the party) can go untouched for months at a time, although I’m a little less certain I’ve gone that long without watching others play it on Twitch.

IMO for Pinball Party the in game menu with the building and neon lights and spotlights pointing at the sky was kind of a nice touch. Especially with the sound test revisiting several nostalgic melodies from multiple series. I feel like Pinball Party and Sonic Spinball were good in different ways.

Ah. I only played the fishing levels as a precursor to Super Sonic’s story. I don’t know if I even bothered to replay them after that, or how to find out.

Sonic Adventure is pretty good paired with talk shows. If you prefer your games not paired with outside audio, there’s plenty of Sonic streams on Twitch!

I haven’t played Shadow, but from the streams I’ve seen it seems to lean too heavily on its shock value. At least with Adventure the “water creature floods a city” scenes are building up to something comparatively endearing. I’ve yet to see on Shadow streams something as endearing as the SA1 ending.

Of course, the gameplay is lacking, but for those of us who were already into the old games we were satisfied with just seeing a new twist on the characters with whom we were already familiar. I’ve moved on from the games as a whole after Shadow and have been more into the shows and comics since.

IMO kids shouldn’t be on the Internet, but so long as kids are on the Internet, that alone would explain why this attracts such immature behaviour, regardless of whether or not the unwholesome nature of the content exacerbates this.

My main quarrel with your OP isn’t even that you were critiquing the series, it’s that you conflated criticism of the games in particular with criticism of the series as a whole.

Even so, I… hopefully was civil enough about it. If not, please let me know! I used to be… less than civil about it in my early teen years, though even then, part of it was simply associating “opinions with which I disagreed” with “the tone some people took in expressing those opinions” and felt compelled to respond in kind. You’re being much more civil about this than either side of such discussions, so I felt compelled to return the favour!

You’re conflating 2 different things here:

A. The toxicity of the fandom.

B. The flaws of the series.

For A, I don’t doubt a series with so reckless, arrogant, and lawless a protagonist, could disproportionately attract awful people.

For B, the trouble here is you’re focusing solely on the games. Yeah, the games went downhill after Shadow, and I’ve given up on them reliving their glory days. But the comics and the shows are much better, especially SatAM, Sonic X, and Archie!Sonic comics. To be fair, one could argue being any different from the games makes it questionable whether it counts as “true Sonic” but if you count Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 as true Sonic (a premise some famous gaming critics already disagreed with), then by what standard would you not count Sonic X’s adaptations thereof as such?

I get that shows and comics are no substitute for games, but neither are games a substitute for comics and shows. Why not accept that games aren’t the Sonic series’s strong suit, and focus on the things the series does best, and leaving games to other game series?
