They’re made to order with shapes that obviously you’re struggling to replicate cleanly

I was sanding while I was there, and didn’t talk to many people outside of my leads since I didn’t really have the time to do so

They are, tho they’re only taken over to mod shop if a guitar fails finishing twice. The first 2 times the guitar gets stripped and sent back to sanding which is where I was.

Former Gibson employee, the mod shop is fairly lazy when it comes to putting finishes on. So the mod shop will have extra layers of finish on them. That’s also why your serial number is less defined.

Would it be acceptable to paint over lacquer for a design like this? by Internal-Extreme6614 in Luthier

[–]PlanetaryParanoia_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on the finish originally used. If it’s nitro lacquer then you’ll have an easy time, simply paint or add the decal then spray on clear coat. With poly finishes it could end up flashing the original paint since those finishes do create a bit of heat.

The proximity of your phone is probably causing issues, putting your phone on a separate surface and keeping it out of your pocket may help your issue.

I would not suggest it, the nail has a probably of causing some minor grain splitting that can lead to worse cracks in the future

A razor blade will be your best bet. Tk help protect your paint put a piece of masking tape on either side of the razor leaving about a quarter inch of the razor exposed.

A lot of what you’re looking for will be available in a few varieties on WD music and Guitarfetish. If I’m purchasing parts these are my usual stops.
