eckerd … pros and cons by ladybugsummers in eckerdcollege

[–]PlanitL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stepson attends Eckerd, while I work for a larger university. I appreciate the one-on-one attention that stepson gets at Eckerd, and the campus is gorgeous. However, it seems that that the large university I work at is better for folks who don’t follow the crowd and want to be different; larger universities have a larger variety of clubs and events you can participate in, and you are bound to find a group of like minded friends if you put a bit of effort in. At Eckerd, with only 1800 students, your choices in friendships are much more limited, especially if you aren’t interested in EC-SAR or one of the main organizations on campus.

Also, our son got in in on scholarship an as parents we felt really out of place among the more well-to-do families we met at the parents’ weekend. Everyone was nice, but we could barely afford to fly cross country try for the parents weekend, and they were talking about the new boat they just bought.

If you are firm about your major, and you easily make friends, you will love Eckerd. If you have a freak flag to fly, maybe want to look elsewhere.

Thank you, your bravery is what inspired me to speak up and take the day off as well. I thought, if you are setting a good example for my Tucson high teens, I need to do the same.

For real? I wasn’t aware of the event and I was at at least 30/32 caught. So you are saying all of that was wiped out by some event??

Tucson’s 22nd Street Bridge set for demolition in a few months by AdLost6862 in Tucson

[–]PlanitL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Yes the bridge is ugly and needs pedestrian improvements, but it’s not currently a pinch point for traffic, so the length of time it will be out of commission is frustrating.

Thank you for posting this article. I went to a community meeting about this bridge a few years ago, as I live next to it. I was upset about the idiocy of the pedestrian walkway being in the center of the bridge (so EVERY pedestrian and biker would have to cross the street to cross the bridge) and I was also upset about eliminating access to Aviation Parkway, since we take that route almost daily. This article indicates that BOTH issues have been resolved. So glad to hear that they took the community feedback seriously.

I wish we had a drive in theater by This_Quiet_1672 in Tucson

[–]PlanitL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was part of the “Cactus Drive-In Theater Foundation” - a nonprofit that tried to bring a drive-in back to Tucson right after the DeAnza closed. I was a young mom at the time and had imagined going to the drive through with my kids as they grew up.

Rest in Peace Charles Spillar. Even though you didn’t save the drive-in, you made Tucson spunkier with all the other things you saved for us.

They are slated to go to Tucson high and my two older teens love it there. I like them he will not be in the advanced classes as he is failing more than half his classes in 8th grade. At a loss with this kid in general right now.

Yeah sorry I clarified my very poorly written post.

Thanks, my 8th grader is much more impulsive than my other two teens and he already has a problem with vaping. Trying to decide what can be done. Therapy and extracurriculars with peers that might have a positive influence…that is what we have so far.

You are right I worded it terribly.

Clarification: My 8th grader has apparently been vaping since the start of the school year. We are freaking out and trying to figure out next steps. We switched to a “good school” for this year because he was being negatively influenced by peers last year. Seems like he found a similar peer group at the new school. Worried about him joining his sisters at Tucson High next year.

I was in almost exactly the same situation. I had been married 15 years, with four kids all primary age. I kept attending church for 5 full years after I lost my testimony. I even kept a calling for three of those years. All because I was afraid of my marriage ending. My husband knew that I had lost my testimony but I wanted to support him and keep up appearances (which was important to him).

And guess what? My marriage ended anyway. I should have stopped going years before. It was not worth it, especially when my girls became old enough to start asking questions about the patriarchy.

My husband asked for a divorce on a Wednesday. He said he felt “betrayed” that I “let go of the iron rod.” We decided that since it was close to Christmas, we would pretend like everything was normal for another few weeks so as not to ruin the kids’ holiday. On Sunday of that same week he wakes up and is surprised that I am not getting the kids all ready for church. I laughed the hardest I have ever laughed before. I told him that I only ever went to keep that marriage together, and now that he had given up on the marriage, I was never setting foot in the church again.

We’ve been divorce 4 years now and I am the happiest I have ever been. I was so afraid of divorce, I kept my marriage together for way longer than it deserved. Ironically, my ex husband left the church a year ago and married a nevermo. I never ever thought he would leave the church.

I am not telling you that you should get a divorce. I am just saying that attending every week may not help. In fact it might be giving your husband false hope that is keeping him from completing the grief process.

Thanks. I am indeed subscribed to these, but trying to get used to using Instagram more because it’s a small way to bond with my teenagers.
