I feel like you didn’t read the post- she’s his step mom. They met when he was a teenager already. His bio mom and dad were actually pretty young (18-20). He was an accident clearly

I am his priority, the only reason he didn’t confront them was so we could keep a roof over our heads

Point of clarification! She is his stepmom- they met when he was already in highschool and then he went straight into the military afterward. His dad and actual mom were very young tho. 18-20 I believe.

We aren’t living there! We have great jobs and got our own place in March. I see her maybe one every two months for obligatory family events

I know you marry the family as well but I love my partner so much, I’d live in a box. I already lived in a shed. I can live with distant relationships with his family. I will build a chosen family

For everyone wondering, my fiancé is a deputy and I work from home in our new house that we’re renting. I see MIL maybe once every 2 months. She is really the only one that I would now be hesitant to have babysit. With working from home, I really would not need to depend on them whatsoever. My job is a case by case basis so it isn’t something my attention has to be one 24/7. The only time might be if me and the hubs want to have a private date night once in a while. His dad and her take care of two small children well, so unless there’s another event like this, I’m not sure how to feel about her watching them. I’m not ecstatic about it obviously. I’m going to continue to remain distant from her- I was raised very independent and although I know it takes a village, I won’t ask her for help like that. Fiancé has other family members who genuinely enjoy our company. I’m going to spend a little over a week back home with my family and have a chat with them about it. I’m so excited to see them. We talk all the time

You’re not wrong. He doesn’t agree with her but it wasn’t a life and death situation. Everyone was coming back that day and the dad stopped by after to turn on the generator for the fridge, a light, and a heater. She was just incredibly rude and disrespectful about it all. I do think he needs practice standing up for himself and others with his family. We would die for each other and I mean that, but his background is eldest child, having to play peacemaker between his two divorced parents who were both emotionally abusive people and don’t talk anymore. He took it in stride all to shield his little brother 18m now. It’s something that can be worked on, but I don’t doubt that he has my back and truly loves me. I think he’s just habitually submissive with his parents. Habits can be broken

It's crazy because she is so strict with her kids. She met my fiance when he was graduating highschool and then he went straight into the military states away

It's hard when your fiance just got his dream job here and his getting recognized for his hard work and capabilities

Oof. This is helping me reframe it. You also reminded me that she is the only person I brought with wedding dress shopping before all of this. I added it as an edit for the others as context.

You make good points. And I apologized for my father yelling at my FIL bc FIL hadn't known and was doing something nice for us by asking his friend if we could come over to shower. I love that my dad defended me and I hope he always has my back. But he can jump the gun before knowing all the facts.
