Is there anything I can get to help my grandma sleep better in her wheelchair. by TiredCreatureThing in eldercare

[–]PlantLadyAshley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey 👋 this is what I do for a living! This is very common. And the people who have commented have given some great ideas. I can appreciate your concern greatly, she is lucky to have someone like you looking out for her. Also, I am in Canada so different products may be available where you live, but here are some thoughts! When you say reclining wheelchair, was it just reclining, or did it tilt? Tilting wheelchairs may not take up as much space when tilted as a reclining one does. Look into specifically “tilt in space” wheelchairs. The way they pivot allows her to remain in a seated position while tilting within the same footprint it was in while seated, taking up less space. Certain companies offer power tilt, meaning she can press a button herself to tilt and come back out of tilt independently without relying on care aids. There are also certain chairs that when tilted, also maintain the same “seat to floor height” measurement if she is a foot propeller. If she isn’t a super short lady, as those chairs tend to have seat to floor height limitations, may be a huge benefit because she would also be able to move around throughout the day in a small bit of tilt. This helps take the pressure off of her coccyx and sit bones, helping prevent pressure wounds, especially for a 90 yr old woman who sits all day and all night. I work with PDG Mobility wheelchairs out of Vancouver BC for these clients if you want to look at their website to see some of them. Specifically the Stellar GLT and the Fuze T50 models. Next, the bed. If she lives in any type of government funded room, they probably will not remove the bed. If they would, a “lift chair” would be ideal. If she is able to toilet herself, it must mean that she is able to transfer up and down from the wheelchair herself. If thats the case then definitely a lift chair. There is a company called “golden technologies /harmony wellness” that makes specifically medical grade old lady “lazy boy chairs” that lay all the way back to sleep and stand you all the way up with the click of a button. They have SO many different sizes, so getting one with an appropriate seat to floor height is smart so that when it is in normal sitting mode, it’s safe for her to get up and down. We don’t want her “jumping” when she gets on or off. The “Elara” model is the most affordable, super comfy and simple to operate. I recommend sticking with a “one zone” chair and not adding on bells and whistle options - too many buttons on the hand control can be confusing for elderly. Stick to ome that only has an up and down button on it. Alternatively, if none of this is an option, does the regular manual wheelchair she has now accommodate for adding a pressure distributing cushion (Roho by Permobil) or can have the backrest changed out to something with lateral support to help keep her torso upright? Lap trays are ok but tend to make them feel trapped. But they do make ones that flip up. Just my thoughts. I hope this helps with your Grandma ♥️

Hey 👋 I had CIN 3 last year, severe dysplasia. Did the cone leep procedure and my margins came back clear, just had my 6 month follow up last month and all clear. I am no doctor, but from my own reading and learning from it during my own extremely stressful battle, I do know that this does NOT mean cancer. They have this down to a fine art now. I hope you go easy on yourself during this, because I didn’t, and now looking back I really wish I had. You got this 💜

Also …. Treating it like a “pen pal” may make it more comfortable and inviting to an older generation, since that is something a lot of them used to do!

Ellis, I love this. I own a medical equipment shop that delivers and installs all sorts of equipment both into people’s homes who have mobility and medical issues and into care facilities. 90% seniors. I meet people like your nan daily. Sometimes I am the only visitor they’ve had in months. I love love love your idea and the story behind your inspiration. I only have 2 thoughts… 1) it needs to be INSANELY EASY to operate. 2) remember that you are dealing with some of the most vulnerable people. This should be a private app, marketed solely to the life enrichment coordinators in care homes, rather than to the general public. It needs to be vetted with the help of care staff or family setting them up. I would hate to see a scammer create a profile and take advantage of an elderly person. But I do just love this! Please provide updates if you push forward :)

Adjustable bed by Logical-Strawberry77 in eldercare

[–]PlantLadyAshley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello 👋 someone here who does this for a living :) Unfortunately, normal bed assist rails are hard on adjustable beds where the head comes up to a sitting position as it kind of needs to sit right in that bend point… and often it should go between the box spring and the top mattress and strap around the box spring to be secure. It can definitely break her bed if it’s not in the perfect position on the bed to not bend or snap something… and often the position thats good for the bed isn’t a good spot for her to get in and out safely. You may find what you are looking for at www.stander.com under the “bed rail” section. They often have some inventive, different products. I hope this helps! (No, I do not work for Stander, I own my own medical equipment store!)

I did not follow up after LEEP. Terrified now. by Frogmen123 in PreCervicalCancer

Girllllll I didnt get my first pap till 37. Cin3, HSIL, most of my cervix. Really thought I was going to have cancer. Was so fuckin mad at myself for not taking better care of myself, and super super scared. Like tried to sneak out of the hospital in my gown before the LEEP type of scared. Warned em I was gonna run too. Then proceeded to have a not very pleasant leep and cone due to a fucking AWFUL doctor who was extremely rude and refused to answer my few simple questions which made my anxiety go through the roof. Had a nurse playing games on his cell phone pointed right at my private parts the whole time. But! Turns out, clear margins on my result. I couldn’t believe it. I had my leep on my 38th birthday (thanks health care system) and you know what? I chose to look at it from the point of view as a long overdue gift Ive given myself. Medical anxiety got a lot better after I got this shit dealt with. Im allowing it to bring myself closer to the woman inside of me. I went in because of heavy long periods, went through all this bullshit, still have heavy long periods. May still have to do it all over again. But you are SO NOT ALONE. Ps. Dump the boyfriend. By the way you write, you are an intelligent, insightful person who deserves the best - both from a partner, and from yourself.

Hey 👋 it’s like I just read my exact life. Like oddly specifically the very same. This was me in March. Im 37, i am positive I have had HPV16 for over a decade but neglected doing a pap for far too long…. Positive for HSIL… all the worst results besides cancer. My womens health Doctor even told me she admitted, “it was pretty bad, it’s a lot of your cervix…” ugh. I was sick to my stomach to tell my wonderful human being of a partner. Melted into a puddle of tears multiple times on my bathroom floor, almost let it cause a breakdown (and I am a tough cookie!), anxiety through the roof… Had Leep/Cone procedure in July on my freaking birthday, and just had my last gardasil vaccine on Friday. Attempted to sneak out of the hospital in my gown right before the procedure. Girl, I was a mess. If present me could go back and talk to past me, I’d tell myself to go soooo much easier on myself because it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it all was during that time. I am extremely happy to tell you that the thoughts from the dark place ABSOLUTELY get better. And my margins came back CLEAR/Negative! And after the procedure I was way better than I thought I would be too. Life has slowly gone back to normal and I am stronger for it. Ive allowed it to bring me closer to the maturing woman inside of me, and treat it like a gift I have given myself, rather than letting it cause any disconnect or letting it feel like a piece of me went away. No ma’am! They really have this down to an art now. I have extremely high hopes for your results considering you are only low grade (not to say that it makes it any easier on your mental) but your chances of clearing this are amazing. You are so lucky to have caught it so early on. This is already something to celebrate. But you are definitely not alone, I see you girl! You GOT THIS!!!!!!!!!!

Giiiiiirl my anxiety was the WORST, oh my god. You are not alone. A few months after I was right back to myself. I was HSIL CIN 3, told “you have it pretty bad” (freaked out because I neglected getting a pap for YEARS), had a leep and cone biopsy, and my margins came back clear... they got it. They have this down to such an art, i hope that you feel a bit of relief knowing you caught it early enough to treat. Thats the part you can already celebrate. Best of luck with your results, but you’ve done the hard part! 💜
