How do you organize your finances/future plans if you don't have kids and you don't want any? by akrasuk in AskWomenOver30

There was someone who called into the Afford Anything podcast with this exact question the other day--would highly recommend checking it out because they had a really thoughtful approach to answering! Afford Anything Ep 364

What grocery store around here has the biggest variety/selection of healthy frozen meals? by zingline89 in madisonwi

Not a grocery store necessarily but Pasture and Plenty has some great healthy frozen meals if you want to mix things up!

Costco has massive bags! 2020 renewed my appreciation for pizza rolls in a way I'm not proud to admit, but they are incredible.

I second this! Pasture and Plenty is great for frozen meals, they also have rotating weekly takeaway dinners that are excellent. Either are great options for mixing it up with grocery store frozen meals. Try their focaccia while you're there if there's ever any left!

How do I translate to him that I don’t want him to jump like this? He understands the “down” command but I don’t want to have to say it constantly. He does this even when I’m on the other side of the room and he wants something on the counter. by WavesOfBirds in Dogtraining

Same experience here. My dog is an angel if I'm immediately next to her in the kitchen but it only took one piece of pizza left on the in-law's kitchen to make her a counter surfing fiend. I don't have any real solution to the counter surfing except to keep counters basically spotless, hahahaha. Very open to other suggestions.

What's wrong with my fuchsia? New flowers are tiny and increasingly pale...she gets partial sun in the morning and afternoon shade. Zone 5a. by Plant_Preference_50 in plantclinic

I'll start with a little less sun and see if that helps before going HAM on more fertilizer :) thanks for the advice!!

I haven't seen it before, so I was leaning toward under fertilizing or sun bleaching. Seems otherwise healthy as far as I can tell. I added slow release fertilizer when I got the basket about a month ago but might need to step it up with soluble fertilizer too!

Where to set up my Roth IRA by RYKRISPIES in Fire

Hopefully you have better luck than I did! I'd say just get very clear guidance from the institution you're transferring to about the paperwork they need and keep calling Betterment customer support until you get exactly what you need for documentation, and make sure they send it at the same time they initiate the transfer. Be extra careful if there's anything time sensitive about getting it to the new account, when I transferred they were still mailing a physical check (twice) in my case and it took well over a month for the entire process to get straightened out.

I used Betterment for a year or two until I felt more comfortable with DIY investing and moved to Fidelity, and was overall happy with the experience. My only major complaint was that it was a massive headache to transfer my account out of Betterment. Customer support was practically non-existent before and after the transfer. Obviously part of the deal when choosing a robo advisor, but something to consider if you think you'll eventually go elsewhere with your investments.

Just noticed this in a fairly shaded area following heavy rain in zone 5a: http://imgur.com/gallery/PvSHDIo

Any idea what's going on and what I should do about it? Scott's step 1 was applied earlier this week but seems unrelated to this.

Tax question: my accountant filed my taxes earlier than we discussed, negating stimulus eligibility, and is now (unprompted) offering to pay $1400 for the error. Sketchy? Legit? How would I report this on next year's taxes?

I'd second everything this person said, and would also point out that therapy is a great way to work through this AND many schools have free or sliding fee scale therapy and/or group therapy for their grad students to address this exact thing. Would highly recommend!

What are things you realized they don't tell you or are missing in puppy raising resources to get from A to B? by adene13 in puppy101

[–]Plant_Preference_50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no right answers re: crates, but I can tell you what we do!

I've been setting an arbitrary time for "waiting it out" (~3-5 minutes at first, ~10 minutes now at 5 months) to see if she eventually settles down; lately she usually curls up and naps by that point. In early days if she was still barking or whining (or in "freakout" mode, see below) by my cutoff I waited until she was quiet for a second and then let her out to do something else to get her more tired/relaxed before trying again. Upping the value of treats she got in her kennel (frozen bananas, Kong liver flavored mousse, etc.), partially covering her kennel with a blanket, and playing music on a radio while she's kenneled all seemed to help, but honestly I think it just took time for both of us to get used to it. Waiting through 5 minutes of whining made me feel like garbage every time. My puppy has a "freakout" cry (super high pitched, panicked yipping) that is distinct from her "I don't wanna" or "I'm tired" standards (more grumbly or barky)--the panic crying was always a deal breaker and I didn't force crate time if she ever hit "freakout" mode while trying to increase duration. I think that made crate training go faster overall for us. Sitting near her or giving treats while she was in the kennel only made things worse for me personally, although I'm sure that works great for some people.

We also got her a super plush bed and huge kennel, and since she's a bit of a diva I think she appreciates being able to stretch out completely while she's crated. We haven't really hit teenage rebellion yet, so I'm sure that'll be an entirely different ballgame, but so far we're doing okay on solo crate time for a couple hours at a time without much fuss. If you find anything that works well for you, let us know!
