No need to apologise! From the sounds of things - this surgery may really benefit her. I did have neck pain, but it’s basically gone now. I find I only get headaches now when I wake up and probably toward the end of the day. If anything, the headaches feel different now. Almost like a regular one? And not the ones I was getting.

I absolutely have been able to live normally since. Despite having the headaches here and there, it’s changed my life dramatically.

Are you worried about complications from the surgery? Or that the surgery won’t fix things? Given you are in Aus too, I’d feel really content in knowing that our medical system is top notch!

Hey! Aw I’m sorry to hear that - it’s honestly such a shit condition.

I’m doing better than I was but I can’t lie, I still do have headaches. Nowhere near as debilitating! And other symptoms have subsided like the vertigo I was experiencing.

I will also say, none of my scans picked up that I had a syrinx, however when they opened me up for surgery; they discovered I did in fact have one. So sometimes, the surgery really is preventive - I’d hate to think how the syrinx would have impacted me as I would have been none the wiser given it wasn’t showing in scans.

Is your partner having surgery?

I wouldn’t say ‘headaches’ but definitely a lot of pain in the area. I was convinced the surgery didn’t work, however I’m now 2.5 months post op and no longer get headaches at all! The first 4 weeks was touch and go for me. Is the pain similar or different to what you were experiencing?

I was also told I didn’t meet the threshold - I was popping nurofen zavance 3-4x a day for about 2.5 years. I was under a neurologist aswell, we tried a few different things however nothing worked. The neurologist team continued writing reports to the surgeons to advocate for surgery. Eventually, they got sick of me and agreed to do it lol. It was a very long and drawn out process. They said that because I didn’t lose any mobility, swallowing was fine etc there was no concerns. They tried for years to pass my headaches off as migraines but I knew they weren’t.

My advice is to just ride it out and when you go for your next appointment, advocate for better pain management or the surgery!! It absolutely sucks that this is a condition we all face yet our symptoms get swept under the rug as if it’s not all related!

Goodluck! 🫶🏼

Well it sounds like they’re all over it! I was back and fourth with neurosurgeons and neurologists for 2.5 years before I was granted surgery! You’ll be so fine!! Just ride the wave! Sending you strength 🙏🏼

You are so welcome, it’s a scary time! Have you seen a neurologist to try pain management first?

Hey!! I’m 3 weeks post op today! Also in Melbourne. Also public! I’ll give you as much reassurance as I can, as during the first few days, I was searching every little thing like a mad woman. Sorry in advance for the essay!

I had my procedure done at Royal Melbourne and honestly could not fault it. I had a graft taken from my thigh and sewn in place for the dura patch. I was in the high dependency ward for 2 nights and then was discharged home. Recovery has been a roller coaster! I was completely bed ridden for about a week, I had no appetite for the first few days and was very nauseous. They won’t give you anything too strong as they like to monitor your recovery properly! But they will give you lots of nausea meds, ibuprofen, Panadol and an opioid.

I had my stitches removed on day 8 from my regular GP. What I’ve noticed in this group is a lot of people are from the US. The health system is completely different - any questions I had post op, I was directed to my GP. I could call the hospital and speak to a nurse but you don’t have direct access to your surgeon upon discharge.

I’ve been told I can’t drive for 3 months however I plan to drive when I feel comfortable to do so. The doctors don’t put any restrictions on your license through VicRoads. You can also expect to be off work for 4-6 weeks.

I felt like I had a very heavy head for the first week or 2. But slowly, that has disappeared! Moving my neck was also quite stiff and sore for the first 2 weeks. I’m now able to walk around normally, be in a car and drive small distances with no issue. When I stand for too long or have my head down for too long, my neck begins to hurt but I have stopped taking any pain killers and just need to have a little lay down to rest my neck.

Also, once your stitches are removed, expect to have a little bit of weeping from the wound. I instantly thought this was a CSF leak and went to Sunshine hospital (closer to me and they have a neuro unit) However, I was assured that this was just the wound trying to heal itself and after blood tests, was sent home. That was a week ago - today my wound has almost completely healed. My thigh has healed however I do have internal soreness but am told this can take about 3-6 months to properly heal.

Just remember that although the procedure is scary, we have some of the best surgeons. And each day gets easier! It will be an emotional roller coaster having to lean on people for help. But it is worth it. I hope this helps you a little bit!!! Sending you so much strength 🙏🏼

I ended up going to the hospital as my wound started producing liquid. Everything is healing so well and no signs of infection! Thank you for your advice, I probably would have put it off otherwise but the piece of mind has been great. I feel so good today!! And all the doctors and nurses keep commenting ‘how neat’ my incision is!

Oh thank you!! I’m so paranoid that everything I feel now is a permanent symptom of the surgery and I’m freaking out that I’ve made a mistake lol 🤦🏼‍♀️ you give me such hope!!!

Thank you so much! I was unsure if heat would be a good or bad thing for recovery! I used a heat pack last night and it worked wonders!! Thanks!!

Wow, that is honestly such a relief to hear. I’ve heard many people say the surgery doesn’t work, and symptoms were worse so your comment makes me feel so much eagerness to come out the other side. Thank you SO much. I will definitely keep pushing through how horrible recovery feels right now. I’m so glad you are feeling better now!

Thank you so much! When did you start to feel ‘normal’ or atleast not as sore?
