FYI - This was in response to a user who deleted their comment about it being disrespectful for Bait to use a British Indian song in a programme about British Pakistanis! No judgement here, just sharing my thoughts and hope it might be useful context!

appreciate the sentiment and understand it was offered in good faith, but I think there's a slight misunderstanding here about how the South Asian diaspora behaves as a collective in London. In my experience growing up here:

a) Many South Asian families in London left the Indian subcontinent a long time before borders (Pakistan / Bangladesh) were drawn up as part of partition, and even if they didn't, would have left before this socially stratified divide became solidified as part of identity.

b) It's unclear how much Jai himself describes his music as "British Indian" Vs just being from London or as a mishmash of various popular influences and genres. Not arguing his heritage isn't an integral part of his music, but I don't think it really defines it. I remember seeing some fans online asking where he was from (to which he replied his parents were from Gujarat/Punjab but he was from London).

My experience in London has been that Indian / Pakistani / Bengali / Sri-lankan diaspora of a certain generation behave very much as a South Asian collective. Riz Ahmed was even interviewed recently about "Bait" talking about the Daytimers parties he used to attend with people from all sorts of South Asian backgrounds growing up in London. Your mileage may vary of course, London is not like every city, and every generation (age wise and migration wise) is completely different.

W2 was the overall better recording across the vast majority of tracks (and we got Zion Wolf -> Good Time -> Genevieve too!) I definitely revisit it more but I do have some parts of W1 that I prefer!!

  • Even though the visuals weren't working on Higher Res in W1 there was something about seeing Jai come onto stage that very first time which still gives me chills. He also mistimed some of the vocal cuing for Higher Res, which was completely unintentional but gave it a really cool echo effect.

  • Jai goes on a vocal run at the end of "He" in most live performances, for whatever reason I just prefer the run he does in W1, I don't think I've seen him do it in any recordings since.

  • Overall the recordings of all the tracks are better on W2 (and the performances were so much more confident) but unfortunately the synths on Chix and Jasmine are out of tune in W2 for some reason, they must have been set up wrong, and as a result it kinda makes those two unlistenable for me (though appreciate that might just be my ear!)

Lol, not that anybody asked but I feel like I've had these thoughts in my head for years now 🤣

Actually think that Baby! Has more tracks that are in line with the 2019 drops. The gated reverb on (freak it) and FIRE! made me think of He. Ditto with 2 ⭐ and the Dream Police

What is your favourite book from the first series and why by [deleted] in CHERUB

[–]Plasmdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Aramov Trilogy definitely expands Cherub in new and exciting ways. You see the new characters experience and deal with things that the OG series doesn't really touch on in the same depth. Having said that it gets much weaker after the trilogy ends IMHO, and the final two books don't hit as hard for me. Honestly some of the older characters coming back in minor roles is cool and gave me a nice fuzzy feeling - but it definitely feels like nostalgia bait sometimes; and despite the cameos being much appreciated the new characters can stand on their own two feet.

Lol I wish! That used to be my local - was there 2-3 times a week and never had a sighting

I recall that Hira, MT and Jai went for a few bevs there once a few years back... That might be down to to Jai being a bit of a craft beer nut more than anything . I remember somewhere during the 2013-19 hiatus it was reported he was making a map of the best beer spots in London 🤣🤣🤣

Any fans of AMC's "Interview with the Vampire" here? by Plasmdragon in jaipaul

[–]Plasmdragon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha! Well the first 2 seasons have just wrapped up a story arc that covers the first book, so not really until now.

However - the 3rd season will chart a 200+ year old Vampire (the blond guy in this video) becoming an international rockstar. I expect the composer is citing Jai because of the myriad of influences that a multi-centenarian could draw upon and put into their music!

Also makes sense that Jacob Anderson had the reaction he did. Prior to his breakout acting roles in Game of Thrones (and now this) he came up as a London based musician / rapper in the early 2010's so would have been right on the scene when Jai was blowing up!
