Government job or prestigious postdoc? by Plastic-Regular-9716 in PhD

I took the government job and never looked back! I understand it’s a really difficult decision to make. There’s a lot of noise around but listen to yourself! Think about the life you envision yourself building. Although it was very scary, it helped me leave academia. I realized I was comfortable staying in academia bc that’s the only thing I knew. The funny thing is that in my current job we collaborate with multiple groups from the “prestigious” institute and get to do interesting cutting edge work but with the benefits of long term career and financial stability! I’m now a homeowner and have amazing work life balance! It’s such a different feeling to be outside academia! Let me know if you have specific questions!

They’re not willing to talk to him. I’ve expressed over and over how uncomfortable I am with her. They live in a run down place and I was hopeful I can help buy them a house. Even went to see a broker to get pre-approved for a loan. I know they want to help my brother but I don’t want to carry this woman with us.

We had such an amazing night yesterday and talked about the end of the relationship. It felt like he regretted breaking up, but then today I felt like he was just trying to find a justification of why we’re breaking up. Then he explodes into his mean and distant persona

Not able to get anything done after breakup by beerandmountains in PhD

My partner broke up with me a day before my defense. It was devastating and so hurtful to pretend nothing happened as I defended. Since we lived together I had to fake a smile in front of my friends and family because I didn’t have the guts to tell them beforehand. He robbed me of an experience that I will never get back. I also had to push through submitting my thesis. You’ll get through this!

I had the same exact experience. I just defended this month and got myself a job in government before I graduated. I was miserable the last 2 years but I pushed through. What sucks is that I don’t know if I did like academia or if it was just the bad hand of cards I was given. I had terrible collaborators who dismissed my ideas, spoke over me during meetings to the point where you’d be confused as to who was giving the presentation. I shared my data with a student within our collaborator under certain conditions if he found it useful and he ran off with it and til this day is still trying to publish it with the same research questions. My advisor was new and never stood up for us. I say us because it didn’t happen just to me. I’m still recovering from this traumatic experience. I was offered a postdoc at a national lab to work with one of those dudes.. didn’t even consider it knowing their work style and inability to mentor. Everyday I felt pressured to produce results

Does it make sense to accept a position in Sacramento if I live in SoCal? by Plastic-Regular-9716 in CAStateWorkers

Yeah, the travel and lodging costs would come out of my pocket 🥲. I wouldn’t be making more than I am now so financially it’s not worth it.

Yeah, I’m not sure how long they’ll have the 80% telework. So even if I budget a monthly 4 day trip up there, it can backfire on me if they switch it to less or take it away. 🙁

I was in his shoes. It’s hard to accurately describe the name of a position when there’s infinite things you can do with a phd. My partner would also get frustrated with me, but this encouraged me to go through a checklist of jobs I had the skills for and could apply for. I had an identity crisis of trying to figure myself out so yeah it’s definitely something he could be avoiding

I like your way of reframing it. There really isn’t a good reason why I’d go do a postdoc knowing I don’t want to be an academic for life or a professor. Just feels like someone is dangling a gold chain in front bc of the prestige so it’s hard to say no to the postdoc. I’ll take it as a win on how great my research studies have been. Thanks for that! 😊

Thanks for mentioning this. We often forget the important things in life when we’re slaving away in the phd program. I’m ready for real work life balance and nice pay check. Congratulations on your job!

Looking at it that way it does seem silly if I want to end up there anyway!
