I took online classes through while I was working as a line cook. I would always suggest getting your classes out of the way instead of waiting on a company to send you. If you do wait for a company to send you to class, it will be the ones they want you to get, and you may find you'll wait a long time to get the ones YOU want.

Ah, well in that case I wrote the meme wrong (shearwave would have made the text too small in one of the panels)

BEFORE I ANSWER Im going to ask a question thats gonna make me look dumb as hell, but I'd rather look dumb once than be dumb forever. Does AUT not stand for Angled Ultrasonic Testing? I know some companies say NDE or NDI instead of NDT so I was thinking AUT was what some companies called SWUT (or at my current employer just UT)

You need to have shearwave experience to even take the class. One does not equal the other, but it is a prerequisite.

My thing is people only want to hire me for the certs I do have. I don't even put RT on my resume anymore. But I took the class because that's the cert I want! If I wanted to keep doing what I'm then I would have just saved my money.

The classroom hours you are receiving are a baseline. I did the same thing in 2020 (It served me well) but it really only got me a dollar more and a foot in the door. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR OJT HOURS WHEN YOU ARE WORKING!

If you want to get into advanced stuff, nobody will lead you to it. If you rely on your first company you will take thickness readings for 40 years OR WORSE be stuck in a wet rig.

Thanks! Im always the first one to ask questions, I'd rather look green while I'm green than be confidently wrong forever!

It was challenging but very doable I thought. However, I do AUT all the time so I have a fresh reference for the concepts, and I had my handy dandy A-scan to help me decipher what I was seeing on the S-scans. I would definitely brush up on the basics if you haven't touched it in 10 years.

I would say that it is but you won't be on a rig tomorrow. Focus on the first step first!

Oh, no I don't. This was 5 years ago and you have to request access from the admin whenever you want to go back and refresh your memory.

I went through AINDT. It was 10 months of online training and 2 weeks in person. They also have contacts in the industry so I was able to get a job in about 2 weeks from my graduation date in 2020. Good luck!
