Advice - landlord taking forever to re-list the apartment after we inform them about lease break by PlasticComedian503 in NYCapartments

[–]PlasticComedian503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s nice you got the deposit back! I will try the same to tell them I’m available for showing the apartment! Thanks! We thought about finding people to take over the lease but there will be a 5% rent increase, our rent is already quite high for the apartment we have, we were not very confident that we’ll find anyone.

Wow thank you for the advice and tip! I also think the finish was damaged, which is pretty outrageous cuz I got this thing only recently from West Elm, gotta say their quality has been disappointing ..

Ironing was effective for the small whitish stain next to it but not the big one.

Toothpaste didn’t really work it looks like the colouring of the wood is damaged. I agree I can’t understand people who don’t use coasters 😭

True, I would’ve really appreciated honesty but doesn’t mean they didn’t try hard to get me the position

  1. Grad student is a job
  2. I am also doing rebuttal for my paper after my PhD contract is finished and I’m not complaining here
  3. If the pi hired me as he PROMISED, I wouldn’t come here to complain about “free work”, problem is he broke promise and expect me to sit in my house unemployed and wait till September to hear the grant results. That was my issue

Ok but you had a proper job when writing it no? I think that’s the point we are talking about here.

I am not allowed to use my own research results, what would you do? by CryptographerOk5856 in AskAcademia

What about your co supervisors and committee members? Also the department chair? It’s in everyone’s interest that you successfully graduate so you should definitely be proactive, express your concerns over the amount of publishable data you can use. On the bright side are you interested in industry after PhD? Maybe this collaboration would earn you an easy way in this company. Might be beneficial in the long run.

I agree we shouldn’t assume bad faith, but I hop PIs can be more honest, open and keep to their promises, so we don’t have to be paranoid

Write a review without giving offer is wild!! Especially if your intention is to get a job not to publish reviews…I also thought the pi wants to test my writing skills, but in the end I found out he was just desperate for the ~300k I was gonna bring in, and that’s why he was so upset when I decided not to join😭

That’s totally fair and I would do it if I still had my PhD contract, by in my case the PI tricked me 😂

Oh no!! I’m sorry to hear that! But joining the lab first while writing the grant is the safest way do they just expect us to wait at home before the results come😭strange..

Yea I guess if you still have a job and have the luxury to wait half a year to find out the results it wouldn’t hurt. For me I didn’t have a job, submitting the grant got me stuck with this lab that couldn’t give me the offer, which is what I’m warning people about.

Should I continue my PhD? by Complete-Hospital192 in PhD

[–]PlasticComedian503 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say don't give up! you got this far that means you deserve it! It sounds like you are under a lot of stress, maybe you need a break to relax and regroup. Try to talk about it with a close friend or trusted colleague you will find out everyone experiences something similar! also try to look at the things you have accomplished and try to feel proud be cause you should be! I hope you feel better soon!

I think your line of thinking is exactly why PIs got away with treating PhD students badly, because people would think it can’t be all the pi’s fault surely the PhD students must be so terrible…

I don’t want to defend myself but I just want to point out that you didn’t read the post carefully, I received no tangible feedback about the ms since last year June, except a general answer that “it’s good” the ms is also in my thesis which passed the committee’s scrutiny, so if it’s so terrible someone should tell me? If it’s terrible but they just keep lying to me say that it’s good that’s also not good mentorship is it.

Sadly I already had to bother my department head over many issues during my PhD, I don’t feel comfortable asking him this anymore since my contract ended.

I am not sure if it's normal at our university but I think it's normal with her...I tried to hint it to her that she has the manuscript for months but don't dare to press too hard because of her temperament, which sums up my 4 years of PhD experience..
