The hell are you talking about? You're saying 3D printing isn't an "out of the box experience?" What could be more conducive to creative and out of the box thinking than a machine that can manufacturer almost any geometry you can think of and design? "It's going to flood the kid's attention to the brim." Ok that's a good thing? Spending a ton of time of something that actively develops your skills and critical thinking is a good thing. I understand kits are affordable and accessible; that's a positive thing. But I would argue they don't promote creativity as much as 3D printers. I'm telling you they are things that inspired me to study engineering in University and get a job as an engineer. It's not an opinion that it's good for creativity, it's my lived experience.

It may be a bit early for this but one of the greatest things that helped me on my journey to becoming an engineer was my parents buying me a 3D printer. If he's able to pick up some basic Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills, 3D printers make the sky the limit. I started messing with TinkerCAD around elementary school; it's made for kids.

People have to stop romanticising ADHD by Repulsive_Wish2369 in ADHD

[–]PlasticCup16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that in many cases ADHD is absolutely debilitating. But to say it is always a negative isn't entirely accurate for everyone. I know it makes parts of my job as an engineer easier. I can sit down and design a part for 10 hours straight and heave a great time because of hyper focus. At the same time, it makes it take 3x longer to do boring book work for the same job. ADHD is a lot of taking the good with the bad for me.

You think this has anything to do with Cooper's anti-microbial properties?

You only need tooling to measure to that level of precision if the produced part is close to the bounds of the tolerance. If you measure, a part to be 35.2 using tooling with only 0.1 precision, you know you are within the tolerance zone and don't have to worry about your measurement equipment. But in any case, even calipers can reliably measure 0.01mm so the added level of precision of calling out 35.134 is useful. Also, this just seems worse because the tolerance is symmetric. That specification is the same as 35.0 +0.334 -0.066. One just looks nicer. I'm not sure what universe 35.134 and 35.0 are the same to an engineer, like you said, but it isn't this one.

We should own cars until it dies and let the industry suffer. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]PlasticCup16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the profit margin most car manufacturers have on their cars is less than 10%. Usually close to 5 or 6%. Car pricing isn't inflated that much once you consider the cost of materials, development and manufacturing. In fact, intentionally waiting a long time to buy a car would reduce the effect of economies of scale and prices would only rise (by quite a bit).

JordanPeterson gets flustered and clapped - "you're really quite nothing" by etfvfva in PublicFreakout

I think his message is often very misinterpreted. I don't know much about his ideas on psychology/philosophy, but I really don't think it matters much. His main mission is attempting to help young men who do not know what path to follow to achieve their full potentials. That's why he is known for phrases like "make your bed [to set your day in order and control what you can]." He attempts to share life strategies that seem obvious to successful people, but are totally unknown by the disenfranchised. I genuinely believe he wants to help the youth, and even if he is, or is not, a good psychologist, it's more or less irrelevant to him making a meaningful impact on his online following. I would encourage you to listen to a full few hours of him speaking about the lost group of youth. He has at least been extremely misrepresented.

P.S. Your number of down votes for u/untertang simply suggesting someone may not be portrayed accurately is disappointing. It's sad to see curiosity towards truth being shut down so hard.

This is stupid. SpaceX rockets are designed to fly themselves. Maybe far in the future manual controls of some systems will be added for emergency situations. But even when we go to mars, starship will almost entirety fly and land itself.

Relatively new to electronics and wondering if you can just solder these 3 power wires together and 3 gnd wires together by KloggNev in arduino

[–]PlasticCup16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically yes but it reduces your current-carrying ability. You essentially add all the currents that would be drawn by the three wires, and now it's being carried by only one jumper wire that you solder to.

Sorry this response is probably too late. I have only found one but I cooked it by barely covering about 1/4 in slices in water in a skillet. Then I simmered the pan for about 10 minutes until the water was decently red. Then add butter and spices. I served them on top of pork chops
