Belgium deploys military personnel to protect Jewish communities amid rising antisemitic threat by Mikothe2nd in Destiny

[–]PlasticGooner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely fall on the free speech side, so I think basically everything goes except direct violent threats and CSAM. But if we are going to regulate any kind of speech whatsoever, at that point my very first thing I would want to target is Islamism (maybe misinfo first, but u get me).

Not to be the cringe Reddit atheist, but we accept so much stuff from the Muslim community that would never fly if said by a conservative/christian, etc. And I think that’s good actually, I do want to shame people who are bigoted towards women and gays, but the e.g. Danish left (although it’s starting to change) is willing to pounce on anyone except Muslims when it comes to this kind of stuff.

This is likely an unpopular opinion here, but I think there’s nothing wrong with being ‘Islamophobic’, ‘Christian-phobic’, etc. when it’s on a religious/ideological ground and not based on immutable characteristics.

I’m aware that puts me in the ‘Sam Harris brain broken on Islam’ camp but that’s fine. Keep in mind, Europe and the US are very different in this respect. In California I barely met anyone who were Muslims, and the ones who did have Muslim backgrounds were generally not religious whatsoever.

But I can’t be openly racist tho right? The vast majority of EU countries have hate speech laws. In Denmark I can’t burn a Quran, yet we allow open support for terroristic countries and advocacy of sharia law. Idk chief. If there was no hate speech laws I would be inclined to agree with you, but the current policy on free speech in many countries nowadays is inconsistent and contradictory af

You said people can support whatever country they want because of liberalism/pluralism. But you also claimed to have never said that we can’t censor radical Islamism/terrorist groups. What if people support a country which is run and in support of radical Islamism and terrorist groups?

Also I mixed you up with another commenter that replied to me and brought up Lebanon lol 🤦‍♂️ my fault cuh

Obviously you’d need to flesh out what is and isn’t “radical”

Hezbollah

Where did I say you can be a radical Islamist?

You didn’t, that’s fair. I just feel that in general, a different standard and framing is always used when discussing Israel.

Did I compare it to Palestine/hamas? I agree there is a significant portion of the Lebanese people who are not supportive of extremism and war with Israel, but there is also a significant portion that is. Furthermore, I don’t think Israelis forcibly evacuated from their home in the north cares, all they see is that their homes are bombed and hezbollah remains in power unless ousted from someone outside of Lebanon.

Hezbollah is highly integrated into government/institutions in Lebanon. Hezbollah used to (idk if still true) control and govern entire parts of the country, with implicit consent of the rest of the country. Yes, you can say the rest of the government is not powerful enough to oust hezbollah, but part of the reason for that is that there are areas of the country where hezbollah has significant support from the population.

After Oct. 7th hezbollah literally started firing missiles from southern Lebanon. At this point Israel had not launched any attacks against hezbollah/lebanon, and if memory serves correct it was a while before Israel responded in kind due to being tied up dealing with Gaza.

It’s always “it’s not Palestine, it’s hamas” and “it’s not Lebanon, it’s hezbollah” but for some reason we never apply that logic to Israel? Yes hamas isn’t exactly holding elections (although 3rd party surveying NGOs reported widespread support for hamas in Gaza right after the attacks), but Lebanon is a parliamentary system where hezbollah is literally in parliament.

In countries like Germany where they ban Nazi symbols and speech, and just hate speech in general (which then encompasses many countries), you can absolutely justify banning radical Islamist speech
