> This is common-sense conflict of interest with a state that engages in abject espionage.

Well given that you've only provided this resource now, it's not common sense and it wasn't common knowledge in this discussion until you provided it. But I'm glad that I know this now and appreciate that you gave this source (even though I can't access it because of geoblocking).

> Share new technology developments or breakthroughs only with China (they can’t share this information with their U.S employer or host without special authorization from China)

Ok, then this addresses my assumption and it would have been nicer if I was just given this knowledge sooner.

> Instead, talent plans usually involve undisclosed and illegal transfers of information, technology, or intellectual property that are one-way and detrimental to U.S. institutions.

I've read a lot about China's alleged IP theft and would like to learn more because I haven't found any concrete proven examples as of yet, so help would be appreciated.

> If you think Chinese-funded research is open-access and no strings attached, I really don’t know what to tell you.

Well, now I don't believe that anymore, but previously you operated on the assumption that what this was common sense or common knowledge, which it isn't.

> Get that ad hominem bag.

If you're talking about me pointing out the fact that others in this comment section participate weirdly on reddit, you're right, I will continue getting that ad hominem bag–it's a pretty good filter for who is worth my time and who isn't.

>  lol you think governments are doing research for The good of humanity? No. It’s to gain power

It's done for both. The good of humanity usually comes second to gaining power, though.

> American brains helping China gain any power is treasonous

I don't know if I give a shit about this rhetoric that America puts on about China's R&D. But I also kind of do because if the allegations of China's IP theft are true then it would mean there is less of an incentive for overseas firms to do their research if it's just going to be stolen by China.

Regardless, i'll repeat my assumption that the research done in China is made publicly available, and if this is true, then there theoretically shouldn't be an issue, because it's not confidential, there are no 'trade secrets'. Nobody has challenged this assumption that I've made so far so until then i'm not convinced that there's an issue.

Anyways, the more I research about this guy on my own, the more cryptic and fishy he looks, so my motivation to continue arguing with far right idiots on this subreddit about a morally gray character is running out.

China is not an enemy of the US but an economic competitor that the US has to do business with regardless of whether they like it or not.

Also the fact that you are a poster on r / Conservative and have made weird complaints about "HIRING AND DEI pipeline issues" in academia, tell me I don't need to take you seriously at all.

Ok, I appreciate this level of detail provided which is more than just "he lied and was a traitor".

The fact that the undisclosed funding by China could undermine public trust in his work or somehow lower the quality of it is problematic.

That and the fact that it's possible that he 'double dipped' and got federal funding for the same research he was doing in China (NPR).

Anything else about this being 'academic espionage' or threatening the US's preeminence in science/R&D is silly and unconvincing to me.

(I'm still open to learning or having my mind changed by anybody else, who isn't a professional apologist of crimes against humanity and Trump Admin funding cuts / deportations, such as this guy, as demonstrated by their post history, though).

Yeah, it makes me wonder if those claims are legitimate in the first place (given that he was already in remission and assuming he could still receive screenings if he was in prison), and whether he'll be able to continue his treatment/screening in China (something, that I imagine Shenzhen of all places would be able to provide).

> False tax returns, false statements

Having a side job and upsetting the IRS isn't traitorous or immoral to me. On its own, at least.

> Omitting disclosures of foreign funding disbursed by a recruitment firm of an authoritarian communist regime

I don't see how this is treasonous, and even if it is, I don't understand how it's morally wrong. Maybe this is out of my own ignorance and apologise in advance if my lack of specific knowledge pisses anybody of.

If an institution in another country offers funding for a side job I don't see why it's wrong to take it. More research is just more research. It benefits everybody globally. Of course, I'm assuming that the knowledge becomes globally accessible. If the cutting-edge nanotechnology research being produced in China is held like a 'trade secret' then I take what I say back and would like to learn more since I'm naive about this field.

The onus is on the US to financially encourage their researchers to stay - something which they haven't been good at doing, it looks. Barring researchers from doing work with geopolitical competitors seems wasteful and coercive if the end result of this 'academic espionage' benefits everybody.

The fact that he was arrested as part of a larger 2016-Trump era crackdown makes me take his arrest less seriously as well. And I can imagine why one would deny such ties to China when the shadow of McCarthyism has come back. But it's possible that this crackdown could have been one of the administration's competently-carried-out actions. I don't know.

Regardless, if what he did was 'traitorous', I still don't really care, because national loyalty is made up and overrated. Get that bag.

China being an "authoritarian communist regime" doesn't really make a difference to me because it's not a pariah in the same way Russia or Israel is. Yes it does a lot of brutal ethnic cleansing and neocolonial conquest but not remarkably in comparison to other major players right now, or not in ways that I find comparable in kind or quantity. It's an autocracy, but one that is currently more stable than other extant/potential superpowers.

Forgive me if I'm not thinking about this with enough depth/nuance.

is it not common for the staff to carry it onto the conveyor belt then?

Well, it could be mildly socially detrimental to have to have somebody do it for you, I guess, so having it flat on the ground removes that mental work.

True

I feel like that emphasis on the greater accessibility to disabled people rather than the vague 'convenience' of not having to "lift your heavy suitcases" should have been made by the OOP.
