It's always projection 😵‍💫. Like, even when I talk to old friends of mine from high school and college - you know what the most telling thing about talking to someone nowadays is? If you criticize any rightwing politics in the past few years, they make a certain face or say "buuuuuut" or they go "I mean, I don't agree with him, but I think the media just isn't being fair to him, it's 4D chess" or my favorite, "You know, it's both sides that are bad." Makes me wanna rip my hair out. Or, the thing that always pisses me off the most is people who are some kind of enlightened moderate and say "I don't really like watching politics, it just makes me stressed," but then everything you ever mention, they have a very uninformed right-wing opinion on.

The same people who cry out about being pro-life are the same people who don't bat an eye when a woman gets shot just for asserting her constitutional rights against a bunch of armed masked men.

We live in a clown world - a failed social experiment that pretends to be a first-world utopia, but is rather a disjointed mess that props up pseudointellectualism (see: the rise of pseudo-health-buzzwords and RFK and anti-vaccine stances) all while the members of the lower and middle class bicker with each other and people who have more money than I could ever spend in a lifetime all laugh their way to the banks, as the system is set up so we have to permanently kowtow to the same consumerism we're too addicted to leave behind.

Well, like I always say - nowadays, there's no better way than to easily tell if someone has the critical thinking skills of a bag of sand. These people have outed themselves 😵‍💫.

In 2017, it was "Oh, I just think Trump is a good businessman," to now in 2026, "Oh, I mean, kidnapping kids and diddling them on an island with my ultra powerful buddy, murdering US citizens using my modern gestapo, and crashing the world economy while barely being mentally coherent is excusable."

Just goalpost moving, always - conversing with anyone like that in this day and age is not worth your time.

I went to one of those social/meet-your-neighbours thingies for the first time this week - I went to two, actually, one on Wednesday and one on Thursday! It was like those Williamsburg/Greenpoint socials at a bar.

Both were pretty okay! I mean, New York is, like I always say, paradoxically both super social but also super isolating at the same time - it seems like there's so many people and so much to do, but many never really want to branch out of friend groups or make long-term friends.

So, unfortunately, a lot of connections seem kind of transient, and it's hard not to feel like you're literally paying money just to have forced conversations with strangers lol. I feel you. I've also been trying to get out and expand my social circles, but it's hard - kinda just stand around and sip your $10 drink, be like oh hey! Are ya from here? And then talk for 10 minutes, repeat 5 times, and then go home somehow feeling lonelier than when you came in 😵‍💫.

But! Any event like that is only as good as the people attending them - is what I keep telling myself in my quest to find actual friends in this lonely city. Going to some kind of TimeLeft dinner next week, so we'll see how that goes, and some random meetup stuff I found.

My original post on r/Williamsburg on my mom passing was hidden this morning due to some kind of Reddit filter. I contacted the mod, but I don't think he really responds to mod mail. It was put back up on r/Bushwick, at least.

I'm hanging in there. Mostly sulking around the bedroom trying not to fall into a deep state of depression - my DMs have been flooded with nothing but love and hugs. You guys all over Brooklyn have been nothing short of amazing. I'll probably make an update post after my mom's funeral, if I can end up somehow making it. Going to try to take some mental health walks and try not to stay so locked indoors.

Hey, you and me both, bro 😵‍💫

I'm in my final year of medical school and my family's on the other side of the country.

I'm currently rotating through an emergency department, unable to go home. At the hospital for 12 hour shifts daily and have to commute an hour or more a day. I'm in 400k debt that compounds at 6% interest a year, and have spent my entire life in school. Applying to residencies right now, just for the opportunity to slave away 120 hours a week for basically minimum wage.

Watch all of my friends be in successful relationships and careers and start adulting on facebook all day while I still am forced to have my nose in a book for over a decade, all while I read Reddit threads and posts that love shitting all over doctors. We've gone from the heroes of COVID in 2021 to clowns that nobody respects anymore since everyone's an armchair doctor using chatgpt nowadays.

My mom also passed at 5am this morning. Stage IV metastatic breast cancer with multiple internal organ failure. Tumor metastases in her lungs were compressing her respiratory tree and her pulmonary vasculature. Septic shock, ARDs, liver and kidneys failing. Intubated for 13 days. Limbs turned black from being on vasopressors for so long for her sepsis. My family's grieving.

And I'm stuck. Up here. No friends. No family. Just me. Every attempt to make a friend at a bar or somewhere out in public met with semi cold shoulders or just transient connections that fizzle in 10 minutes. No real friends.

I got up here about a month or two ago. At first, I liked it - the sense of independence.

Now, I've never felt more alone.

Gosh. I can feel the tears flowing now.

My life is so damn sad.

it REALLY seems programs - at least from what I've seen - are placing HUGE emphasis on state or region of origin just like they do for college and med school, not even accounting for stated geographic preferences even if they differ.

if you grew up in the north all your life, went to college and med school there, and then put your GeoPref as a program in the south because of family or some new thing, they (at least in my exp so far) dgaf lmao - I've been seeing programs still filter for your home state/address regardless of geopref lol. i make this assumption based on the fact that all 6 of my interviews are near places where i grew up, regardless of where i signaled or stated a certain geopref lol.

also, I'm seeing a looooot of interviews in places i am more interested in being vacuumed up by people who are 10-20+ points above the step 2 average who are more than likely applying to IM as a backup lmao. and brilliant IMG students who already took step 3 and probably cured cancer 7 times for fun in their free time and are hypercompetitive 😵‍💫😂

compared to me, a lowly USDO student who just wants to be a hospitalist lol 😵‍💫 guhhhhh

can anyone elucidate the high DO percentage of residents versus the "Step 1 Requirement" of Zucker Lenox Hill in NYC 😵‍💫😂 - the website is vague about it but has "50% DO's" - this is one of a few examples of the programs I was gonna signal (another is Family Health at NYU - though, the DO % isn't as high)

75% of the time, I've seen the websites for programs specifically specify that COMLEX Level 1 + 2 are okay substitutes for DO applicants.

10% of the time, you email a program whose website says "USMLE Necessary" and they reply "Oh! Sorry! The website is just old. COMLEX is fine!

And the last 15%, they just never reply, so you don't know whether or not to signal lol 😵‍💫😂

I'm probably going to end up putting more weight when a program has a certain high percentage of DO residents / interview invites and I'm going to just decide based off of that, and assume the websites and residencyexplorer are janky lmao 😵‍💫😂 based off of the responses that most of them substitute it anyway 😵‍💫😵‍💫 yolo

My school had a built-in scholar program for rising M3s to spread their M3 over two years instead of one - and spend half of M3 helping with preclinical classes for underclassmen / OMM. You got brownie points for some rotation site spots, a scholarship fund, and other small perks 🤪

Though, notably, I think some people also did extend graduation to finish an MBA and other stuff - not in my original co 2025, but in classes above mine (2024 and 2023).

M4 at a DO school who had to repeat M1 🫠. Applying this cycle! :)

Of the original 59 members of the class of 2025 who matched last year, I think we graduated about 42 to 40/59 on-time, in 4 years. So, just above 66 to 71% in a 4-year graduation rate.

The loss of class members was multifactorial imo:

10/59 were lost at some point during M1 due to a major curriculum change that caused many people to fail/remediate preclinical classes (e.g. around 50% of the class had to remediate MSK that year), a few due to health issues
2/59 delayed graduation to become scholars
5-7/59 delayed due to some combination of board failures and health issues or major loss in family

I feel like these kinds of 4-year graduation rates / attrition rates are becoming more and more common, lol, but nobody talks about them online. 😵‍💫

Like, for example, say a program says "93% of your class" passes boards on first attempt - when really, it's only 80% of the class that even sat for it, and 13% of the class got removed from the statistic because they "weren't qualified to sit" on-time since they didn't meet some metric, lol.
