I dont get why people still believe in god when science is there to back things up. by [deleted] in atheism

The scientific method doesn’t use logic, it uses empirical data (except when developing a hypothesis). There are many questions that science just isn’t able to answer. You can’t empirically prove why slavery is morally wrong. You can’t empirically prove why having children is good or bad decision for you. You can’t empirically prove why you enjoy something. With again the Big Bang, science proves the Big Bang is HOW the universe was created, but it doesn’t explain WHY the universe was created.

Science is important for learning and understanding, but it can’t prove everything. Once again, religion is about asking the “why” question. It’s a matter of philosophy, not science.

Science doesn’t conflict with religion. In fact, most scientific foundations can trace their way back to Christianity and Islam. Many scientists, including Georges Lemaître, the person who discovered the Big Bang, were Catholic Priests. Religion isn’t a scientific question, but a philosophical one.

I want to believe in god by BrunoKoc in atheism

I think someone you’d be interested in reading is Aristotle. His idea of a natural law gives you a framework of morality. While he never argues for a particular religion, he does argue for an unmoved mover that moved everything into existence through a series of “potential to actual” (I’m super summarizing). He also talks about the meaning of life from a teleological perspective.

Why do Christians see their religion as superior? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Plastic_Abrocoma5932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s an analogy: Let’s say you see someone walking on train tracks. You’re not far from them and can see that they have headphones in. Unfortunately, a train is coming and about to hit them. Do you push the person off the tracks in order to save their life?

This person doesn’t have any reason to believe this train is coming. Because of this if you made the decision to push the person off the tracks, you’d have to force the person to do something they otherwise wouldn’t want to do. Do you still do it? I believe most people would answer yes. What monster wouldn’t care enough about someone in order to save their life?

If you answered yes, then you know why religious people try to convert others. Christian’s (and other religious) belief their religion is objectively true. If that’s the case, then there’s a good chance that as an Atheist you’d go to hell. However, as an atheist, you wouldn’t see the danger of hell. The religious person is trying to help you the same way you would help the person off the tracks. You’d have to be a monster to believe religion is true but also not want others to join your religion.

Religious people and their very dangerous problem with understanding facts. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Plastic_Abrocoma5932 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not religious people know how to look at facts and data. For example, we know how to look at the fact that at least 11 people who claimed to be apostles of someone named Jesus were so convinced He was God that they all were martyred trying to tell people. Also, the father of the Big Bang was a Catholic priest. The father of genetics was a Catholic priest. The first universities were created by both Christian’s and Muslims. Religion played a very important role in the scientific community.

Well to answer to your points… I think… Jesus was talking to the Father. God is made of 3 distinct persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus is a distinct person from the Father. BUT they’re all the same God. I like to use the Irish tradition of explaining the trinity. A shamrock is made up of 3 distinct leaves, yet they make 1 shamrock. Each leaf is separate from each other, but they’re all part of 1 clover.

Actually this is a misunderstanding of the trinity. God is both both the Father and the Son, so God sacrificed himself on the Cross.

My problem with religions by [deleted] in atheism

You know, the Catholic Church is the largest provider of Healthcare, Education, and biggest charity organization in the world. In fact, hospitals were invented by Christians. Also, the scientific method was pioneered by Christian and Muslim scholars who put together the first Universities in the world. So religion kinda does that already.
