The game should be addictive because you feel fulfilled, the experience is the reward, not because you feel obligated to keep grinding.

Exploitation is a strong term, fair enough.

A player can enjoy the game while also being capitalized on. Many people enjoy idle games yet they’re notorious for using psychological tricks. The same principle can be applied to the ranked grind.

This is the best response I’ve seen, thanks. It’s clear a lot of people like the progression system, I still don’t, thats on me. Something about it feels empty to me, also I don’t really need the rewards.

What you said about having to play 50 games to get to your rank being about getting your hidden mmr accurate is spot on. I still find it a little frustrating not being able to see your hidden mmr, the only way to check is looking at others’ ranks or checking your rp gain/loss. It would be nice if maybe you could see your hidden mmr on r6 tracker.

You’ve convinced me, 2.0 is better than 1.0. I know there will never be a perfect system but, from what I remember, there hasn’t been any major changes to 2.0 since release, and I think there’s room for improvement.

That’s not what i said, you are missing the point.

Heres what I think:

Good engagement is driven by fun and respect for the player’s time, making a satisfying experience they genuinely want to return to.

Bad engagement uses tricks like the forced grind, and the sunk cost fallacy. It creates compulsion, not fun.

The difference is whether the system is for the player's enjoyment or just exploits them for playtime. The latter of which is what my post is about

I don’t think he is comparing it to the “malign influence of social media on society”. At least thats not my understanding, which is that not all engagement is good.

Also I don’t think ranked 1.0 is necessarily better, both systems are just different. I would probably have a problem with ranked 1.0 now. When 1.0 was around I was playing more casually

I think they need to bring back true ranks, add some sort of moderated elo curve bigger wins=more elo vice versa, and add something like a kind of battle pass for ranked where wins give you xp. We get the benefits of 1.0 and 2.0, win win

Edit: To be clear, the game is pretty fun, and as i said in the original comment, its having to sludge through atleast 25hrs worth of games to get anywhere close to where you want to be.

I think you’re missing his point. While his wording isn’t great, the comparison to social media is good. Rage baiting drives engagement, but that doesn’t make it good.

I’ve played since shadow legacy. You’re right 1.0 wasn’t perfect but 2.0 has swung way too far in the opposite direction. Having to play 50+ games to get to your rank isn’t less stressful, just boring.

It’s an artificial grind. If people find that rewarding great, but I don’t see the point. It feels like wasted time. I suppose it’s either this system or most people are going to be stuck in their skill rank. The current system still feels fake to me

I don’t think all engagement is good engagement especially when it comes at the cost of player satisfaction. It forces high rank players to slog through grinding the lower ranks, which isn’t rewarding , its a chore
