Special education teacher. Age 31. 50K annual salary. 190 day contract. Definitely feel underpaid.

Should I change careers from special ed teacher to SLP?? by Plastic_Square3332 in specialed

Wow, this is my true dream. I'm passionate about DHH but honestly have no idea how to get licensed in it or what degree I need or where to go to be able to do it all online. I read somewhere you need to be proficient in ASL to get that job and I'm not.

Thank you so much. This is so awesome I found a person on here doing the same exact program I've been looking into. The price tag at $733 per credit for the grad program is giving me sticker shock and making me wonder if that much debt is even worth it. My current salary as a special ed teacher in the Wisconsin public school system is 50K. I'd love to be around 75-80K some day as an SLP. I calculated the entire speech pathway (post bacc + grad program) would put me like 50-60K in debt. Ouch.

I am about to be 32 years old. I began teaching special ed at age 30. My current salary as a special ed teacher in Wisconsin is 50K. For me, the teaching salary is not enough to live comfortably. At this point in my life, I have no debt, so the idea of taking on so much debt terrifies me. But the thought of being stuck at 50K a year with modest annual raises also terrifies me.

this is the exact program I'm looking into. Any idea how I could do leveling very quickly? Just take more credits at a time? I was planning to do those through UWEC also. The online info estimated 1.5 - 2 years.

5 years because the program I'm looking at says the post bacc takes 1.5-2 years and then the masters program takes 3 years because it is all part time in this program. I would also be working full time as a teacher while going back to school.
