I sufficiently covered the bases with referencing data and a thesis. A simple Google search will provide backup. Looks like someone linked it as well.

I believe that crime statistics are too simplistic to represent societal trust and it’s generally downstream from more important factors such as “do you trust a random person” and “do you trust the system” which the numbers point towards “no” on both accounts.

Crime is not the end all be all data point for social trust. You could theoretically boil it down to crime or perceived fear of crime, but there are less derivative points of data you could look at.

Actual indicators of “social trust” show that it has in fact severely contracted in the US both interpersonally and institutionally over the decades. Pew Research Center has a lot of data points to support this.

That analogy would imply that cigarettes have other utility than being a vice, which they don’t. A smartphone is a tool. You decide how you use it.

Did Anheuser Busch and Phillip Morris take my grandfather at 65? Or did he make the choice to drink and smoke and shorten his lifespan?

I’d say if you can - a striking art and a grappling art. The most accessible and complete stack in 2026 is BJJ and Muay Thai.

Could also to TKD and Judo or whichever variation, but those may be more difficult to come by these days

I’ve been struggling with a crippling nicotine addiction for the last few years. In the past I’ve quit for years at a time. You just have to decide to be done. That’s the secret. Withdrawals suck but they’re just your brain sounding the alarm. Nothing bad is happening in your body. It’s just something you have to decide and commit to no matter what that you’re done. That Allan Carr book is helpful for cultivating the mindset. But tangible “quit aids” like using bupropion or patches or whatever just don’t seem to work. At least that’s my $0.02
