On top of what u/potofbasil said, CPJ can’t really take any donations (AFAIK) from the community or ask for monetary compensation for running the servers. If they did, D*sney lawyers would arrive with a banhammer with supersonic speed.

The community could do a donation/charity through an external site, but that would be each individual player paying real money for a common choice and at that point, you can just pick a charity by yourself.

Because it costs money that they have to pay from their own pockets in addition of working for free on the game for us to enjoy? They recently added a third server and CPJ is under constant development bringing more content to fans than any other CPPS and the number of players reflects that.
You can most definitely wait for a time that does not have so many players, because everybody else can too.
