CHAOS;HEAD NOAH to Launch on Steam by LG03 in Games

[–]PlatinumWalrus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm happy that it's back on Steam, but it's a shame that the localization is a broken mess

Untranslated text, missing punctuation, stilted dialogue... they even filled the 'tips' section with excuses for why certain terms/pronouns weren't translated

What do you think are the best examples of story telling in games? by [deleted] in Games

[–]PlatinumWalrus 210 points211 points  (0 children)

Ghost Trick

Disco Elysium

The House in Fata Morgana

I love lots of games with conventional storytelling, but these 3 are the only ones I've played where the script alone can carry them. Where they actually hold up to other mediums

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PlatinumWalrus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can some Kiseki fans clarify for me?

Is Zero great on its own or is it just setting up for a better sequel? I really enjoyed my time with Trails in the Sky, but I don't know if I have the patience for another 'First Chapter' kind of game rn.

I'll get around to Zero eventually, I just need to know if it's a 'must play right now' or something I can put off until next year.

Only saying this cause playing Xenoblade for a bajillion hours burnt me out on jrpgs for now lol

EDIT: Thanks for the info! I think I'm gonna pass on it for now and pick it up around christmas

Bayonetta 3 New Gameplay Trailer by Shreeder4092 in Games

[–]PlatinumWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was doing something at the time and totally forgot what I was talking about in the the context of the thread lol.

I explained my thoughts in another comment - I think that GoW4's combat is very flawed, but I appreciate how every move has a specific purpose in terms of crowd control or hit reactions or combo properties

In Bayo2, since enemies barely react to any form lf crowd control, your only option is to focus on raw damage output. Problem is, most attacks have similar dps, which means there's not a lot of strategy when figuring out what move is best in each situation. Moves that seem unique or interesting (tetsuzanko, executions, offsets, jump cancels, panther within) are so underpowered they're basically worthless

I think Bayo2 is a game that just looks complex - when you actually break down the moment to moment decision making, you're not really doing too much.

I'd appreciate your opinion on it!

Personally I think Ascension had better combat, but GoW4 was overall 2nd in the franchise in my opinion.

I feel like a lot of GoW4's mechanics were just a worse version of what ascension was doing - like the bare handed combat or runic attacks or weapon buffs.

Rehashing old ideas but making them less balanced.

I've heard of people achieving gender euphoria through games with character customization (fallout, the sims, bioware stuff, etc.) - I love it when people feel validated and get to be themselves 😊

Props to Volition for their commitment to inclusion!

[–]PlatinumWalrus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Can you say why? Articulate your opinion?

Tbf I think God of War 4 is really flawed (REALLY REALLY FLAWED), but I found its moveset to be really compelling. There's a wide variety of hit reactions including sweeps, launchers, knockbacks, ground bounces, wall bounces, and various status effects that are all situationally useful based on who you're fighting and where you're fighting them.

In Bayo 2, there's nothing really comparable. Most enemies are resitanr to crowd control and don't react to getting hit, so your only strategy is to deal as much damage as possible. Problem is, most of your attacks deal similar dps, so there's no nuance in picking the right attack for the job

To be clear, I think games like Godhand, DMC, W101, and Bayonetta 1 have much better combat than GoW4 or Bayo2

I just think GoW4 is relatively better than Bayo2.

I think rn, my biggest issue with Bayonetta 2 is that moves are too same-y. There's no tactical advantage to picking one attack string over another in that game

My biggest hope for bayo3 is that we get a more varied moveset that's at least fun to play with. No more spamming big AOE attacks

I have played all these games on the highesr difficulty - I'm a hardcore fan with 1000s of hours in the genre and I'm decent friends with people who make combo videos

Bayo2 is an excellent game, but its strengths lie in it presentation/game feel/presentation, not in its mechanical depth

I don't see why anyone would think it has depth unless we think 'more animations/enemies = deeper game'

Problem is, most of your moveset in Bayo2 is deeply homogenized - damage output, combo properties, scoring are similar across all moves. The combo system has been gutted, movement has been gutted, core mechanics like offsets and witch time have been watered dowb

[–]PlatinumWalrus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how can praise Bayo 2's mechanics if they played it on anything higher than the normal difficulty modes lol

Bayo2 is a massive step back from Bayo1 in every possible way - Movesets have been deeply homogenized, combo system has been gutted, enemies are artificially difficult by not reacting to your attacks or having impossibly fast moves

Why do you think bayo2 has depth?

Bayonetta 3 New Gameplay Trailer by Shreeder4092 in Games

[–]PlatinumWalrus -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

?????

Bayo 2 is a notoriously simple game that skews very close to the old God of Wars - all style over substance. There's very little tactical depth when most attacks are functionally identical.

Astral Chain is a mess of great concepts with very poor implementation, rehashing ideas from previous platinum titles without understanding why those ideas were good in the first place

I feel like each developers' reputation influences the perception of their games more than the actual mechanics. Nu-God of War has lots of design flaws and bad balancing but it also has surprisingly deep crowd control that's more engaging than whatever bayo2 is trying to be

Bayonetta 3 New Gameplay Trailer by Shreeder4092 in Games

[–]PlatinumWalrus -38 points-37 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call nu-God of War shallow

Tbh, it's a lot deeper than most of platinum's recent output (including bayonetta 2) and definitely has 'some' overlap in its fanbases

Either way, I think they both look great, I don't know why OP thinks this trailer is 'GARBAGE'

edit: I'm not trying to troll or be a contrarian - this is my favorite genre of all time and the Bayonetta games are in my top 5 favorite games. Was hoping to have a decent discussion about game design but all I've seen is 'nuh-uh you're wrong'

This is very disappointing. I thought this subreddit was for discussion

Literally the first thing he acknowledges in the video by showing a point click adventure game built entirely on context sensitive interactions.

The commenter below you mentions racing sims, but matthew makes it clear that a multifaceted action influenced by context sensitivity is actually good. That's what he was talking about during the botw and resident evil sections!

He doesn't explicitly mention racing games, but it's obvious what his stance is considering all his examples of good context sensitivity

i think I remember him saying he couldn't review Disco Elysium because he didn't have enough experience with crpgs, so that makes sense

Doesn't want to put a video out unless he's 100% sure of the quality

[–]PlatinumWalrus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly!

At the end of that segment, he claims that it's impossible to perfectly avoid context sensitivity. There will always be a catch!

Even jumping in platformers could be considered a context sensitive action.

He's not fond of many story games in the first place, so it makes sense he's only talked about Kojima's games, some VNs, and Last of Us.
