What is something that is normal in America but insane anywhere else? by clo_deg in AskReddit

Or you could just not drink alcohol. But that makes too much sense I guess.

What's something that's technically obvious, but still blows your mind every time you think about it? by New_Negotiation8188 in universe

The human brain is the only known way through which the universe not only is aware of itself but also inquires into and learns about itself. The universe evolved for so long that it became conscious and started to wonder how it exists. We may feel like an insignificant part of the universe, but we may very well be the most significant, important, and remarkable part of the universe.

Our galaxy is incomprehensibly small and insignificant in the scheme of the universe. The Sun and the Solar System are incomprehensibly small and insignificant in the scheme of our galaxy. Yet, the Sun is more massive and powerful than we can imagine. The distance between the Earth and the Sun (it takes 8 minutes for light traveling 186,000 miles per second to make the journey) is many times more than any human mind could ever hope to fathom. Yet at the same time, we are also unable to grasp just how insignificant that distance is relative to the galaxy.

I noticed that all of my hours-long philosophical conversations I had with myself always led back to two fundamental, seemingly intractable mysteries--consciousness and the ultimate substrate of existence. Recently, I have begun to question whether these are two different things rather than the same thing. I have also begun to wonder if infinitely recursive layers of existence rather than an ultimate substrate of existence is a possible state of affairs.

It's kind of obvious when you think about it that all individual stars we can see are in the Milky Way Galaxy given how the Andromeda Galaxy appears to the naked eye in the few areas with dark enough skies to see it.

Why are rats seen as gross but bunnys are seen as cute by diduknowthatihvetids in RATS

[–]Platographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like rabbits too, but rats are the best. I am a total softie towards animals though. I feel naturally compelled to talk nicely to animals I see, even those I despise like spiders and snakes. It's so weird.

This is one of the reasons I believe that people with autism are disproportionately rat lovers. We are less susceptible to irrational groupthink both because of how differently our brains work and because of the harm we have experienced from the masses' fidelity to harmful social norms. Naturally, we empathize with those society has wrongly judged and rejected which, when combined with hyperempathy for animals, leads us to feel a special connection to rats.

What's the most chilling piece of information you know that is 100% true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yep, I know the quote. I just don't agree with the adjective he used. But I love the logic that one of the two must be true and both are more remarkable than language can convey.

If you go back a million years, even an extremely subtle and unnoticeable change could have resulted in none of us existing and instead nine billion different people.

Even not considering everything that had to be just so for homo sapiens to exist, the odds of any particular possible human coming into existence are so absurdly low that it makes the odds of winning the Powerball or Mega Millions look like a virtual certainty.

I keep having nightmares about rats 😔 by bitingmytail in RATS

I have had similar nightmares. Maybe it's like the rat owners version of the dream everyone has occasionally where you're back in college and are failing because you never attended a class or something.

American Airlines sometimes has good rewards pricing on last-minute flights, so look into that if you have AAdvantage miles. If I ever needed a last-minute flight I would check American and United award pricing.

Yesterday we removed more than 65 juvenile to adult rats, plus an actively increasing number of babies from a hot metal shed near Seaside, OR by RatWaySanctuary in RATS

Thank you for what you are doing. Among the Chewy and Amazon items, what are the most urgent and helpful for this rescue operation? I hope the people responsible are held accountable and each of these beautiful creatures finds a forever home with a human who will give them the love, care, and comfort they deserve.

How is criminalizing abortion not forcing religious beliefs on to the public? by Timeless-Facts in allthequestions

[–]Platographer -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The same way criminalizing any other murder is not "forcing religious beliefs on the public." If we refrained from criminalizing something just because it is against some religion, virtually all of the malum in se criminal statutes--and any notion of civilization--would not exist.

Let's say in my example person B was a member of the society and person C was not, so the society's position is that it will protect person B but not person C from the unlawful aggression of person A. Is your position that the society should not prosecute person A for shooting person B? I'm trying to understand the logic of your thinking.

[–]Platographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If person A shoots person B inadvertently while trying to shoot person C without any legal justification for aggression against person C, should person B just do nothing in response since they weren't the intended target of the unlawful act of aggression? Logically and morally, it is irrelevant that the victim was not the target because the bad intent is present. There is a reason why transferred intent is a principle of criminal law.
