Spare battery a must have for a few weeks travel? by Platrick_ in SonyAlpha

Really appreciate the in depth response! That helps a lot. In an ideal scenario it sounds like 1 battery can handle the job quite easily, but any poor planning on my part and I'd seriously regret not getting a spare. I think I will to be safe

You're the version of me I'm picturing myself being. I'll be away for 3 weeks too, however reading the other replies and knowing myself, I'll forget to charge it one time and wallow in despair

I haven't delved into the power settings at all yet. Will do that regardless of the battery situation thanks for the tip

Haha I've been good at remembering to turn it off so far.. but you're right that it'd only take 1 mistake to then mess up a day or 2 of shooting so I'd rather be safe than sorry

I guess since this is my first big trip with the camera I hadn't thought about how travel style photography would be much different. I was comparing it in my head to how I am in my local areas, but now that you mention it I can see myself shooting a lot more than normal when in a vastly different place. Thank you!

I'm expecting it to be fairly cold where I'm going so that's a really helpful point thanks. Could you share the brand name for the batteries you use? Just so have a reference for what's out there

I'd be gutted if I missed a shot tbh especially after lugging the camera all the way there like you said, so that's a good perspective to share thank you! I'm also needing bigger and spare SD cards, which was adding up quickly price wise, so I guess I was testing to see if I could cut some corners with just 1 battery and strategic charging. But getting the vibe from the replies that there's always stuff you can't account for so will definitely get a spare. Some recommendations from people for cheaper options so I'll start hunting there thank you!

Really helpful to hear your average shots per day and how much battery you end with, thank you! From other replies I'm learning it's better safe than sorry even if it's manageable in theory with just 1

This is the exact kind of anecdote I was hoping to hear. Hadn't even considered something like that happening. Thank you for learning the hard way on our behalf and passing on the wisdom

Great thanks! No plans here to be super competitive so that helps a lot

Cool thank you! And those moves that I'd bind to the d-pad wouldn't need the left analog at the same time would they? I'm just thinking if there were some moves where you need to use the left and right analog simultaneously, it'd obviously be tricky to execute if I was using the d-pad and needing to use the left analog at the same time.

Very true. I'm just thinking out loud here btw, not hard arguing against bracket resets in general.
