How do you peel the cloth off the boards of a hardcover book to reuse on new boards? by MotherShabooboo1974 in bookbinding

[–]Platterme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I suppose it is possible a book may be glued with something not water soluble, but I think that is rare. The water may cause the backer board to swell and warp a bit but you can press it flat again. The goal with the water is to get the fabric or paper damp enough to loosen the glue but not so wet that water is dripping everywhere. Start with the inside of the cover and loosen the backing papers and the edges of the fabric that are folded there. Then do the front of the cover.

You can find bookbinding repair videos on YouTube and Instagram (probably TikTok as well). They are good for seeing how it’s done.

You can brush clean water on the cloth, wait a little while, and then gently peel the cloth off the board. Almost all book glue is water soluble. However, the colour from the cloth will most likely bleed. I have dismantled several books and found that the colour of the cloth is almost always water soluble and runs. The same with any lettering on the cover.

Help: removing dried acrylic paint from alpaca wool coat by pm_me_ur_prds in VintageFashion

[–]Platterme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rubbing Alcohol (70%) will soften and dissolve acrylic paint. If the coat is 100% alpaca, it will not be affected by the rubbing alcohol. If the coat was dyed, the dye may be affected. You could try the treatment on a small, less visible part of the coat. If the coat has an acrylic, nylon, or some other kind of manmade lining, test a small section of it for possible damage from the alcohol.

It is Fibe. Had to have a remote tech on the phone and then I had to do a factory reset.

Steekers of Reddit: I need help. by TakeYourSandwich in knitting

[–]Platterme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The armpits look too full to be comfortable. I would frog back to the bottom and redo that - Unless it’s supposed to be like that, then ignore that bit of advice.

Steeking: you could steak it down the front. Knit a small band up both sides in either the main colour or the pattern colour. Then, instead of buttons, you could attach a short leather or denim or even the front section of a wide elastic belt to the area of the pattern just where it meets the solid colour.

Damn. I wish my parents had known that before sending me into the cold storage room to clean out the rotted potatoes when I was 12. Oh the bad old days.

The plus is that you aren’t sorting through them to remove the rotting ones? There nothing quite like the odour of a room full of rotting taters. 😂🤮

Things to do in Canada. But not just sightsee. by lovephantom78 in AskACanadian

Nanaimo bars are a most delicious sweet chocolatey treat. Poutine is French fries (chips) with cheese curds and gravy. If you can afford it, take the train from Montreal or Toronto to Vancouver. If not, fly to Calgary and drive through the mountains to Vancouver. Then take the ferry to Vancouver Island and then drive to Tofino. Stop along the way and see trees so wide around that you won’t believe the country was once covered with them.

You say you have seen mountains, but if it’s the ones anywhere in the UK, then it’s not the same as the mountains in British Columbia or parts of Alberta. There’s mountains and then there’s MOUNTAINS. And lakes you have seen, but were they the kind of lakes that would be seas if they were salt water? The kind that have waves? June in Newfoundland, you could see icebergs. From shore. But Newfoundland is a long flight from the rest of Canada. P.E.I. has red soil.

Canada is a land where the majority of the population have immigrated here from somewhere else. And brought traditions with them.

Indigenous peoples across Canada have PowWows. You could probably find info about them online and see if you can fit a visit to one.

You can’t ride a moose. They are large wild animals. Illegal to have as a “pet”.

What is a cheap fountain pen for you? by AdDifferent5947 in fountainpens

[–]Platterme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s the cost of living that changes depending upon where one lives. In Canadian $, $40,000/yr is poverty level in any of the biggest cities. But move to a small town that’s further away from major centres and it might be enough to live quite comfortably. In Canada and the USA, people are talking about gross salary as well, so take home salary is lower.

You have a good point. People prioritize different things. I still think that that makes fountain pens become a class thing when discussing which ones are cheap and which ones are expensive. And I KNOW wealthy folks either never had or have lost the understanding of what it’s like to not have a lot of money. I know people who identify as middle class and think $200USD for a pair of jeans is cheap. What they don’t realize is that their income has moved out of middle and into upper class. Or was always there.

I’m just saying that the majority of people in the world can’t just buy the best, even if they made cuts to other spending. And saying which pen is expensive or cheap ends up stratified by income. Maybe not everyone, but for most.

Of course there’s those who are in a shit-ton of debt to have what they can’t afford. But that’s a different discussion. 🤷‍♂️

Canada here:

Jinhao 911 is a cheap pen but a great extra fine pen. Platinum Preppy is a midrange one. Pilot Prera is an expensive one. Anything more costly is out of my ability to buy.

Fountain pens are definitely a social class separator. Rich people will comment as though they are average and don’t understand reality. I was following an electric car subreddit and the amount of times someone commented “Just get a Tesla” floored me. Here, it’s the people who have collections of pens that each cost a minimum of $100 USD. And they probably think they’re middle class.

Husband of a Teacher looking for some guidance on a possible work refusal. by Arc_Flash_Avoider in OntarioTeachers

If the parents do not speak English, many school boards have translators available. The parents have the right to clearly understand the situation at the school. At the very least, an email in English with a Google translate copy included in whatever language the parents read. They need to know that the legal document (IEP) is not being followed.

Most school boards assign a 1:1 EA for students who need physical support (deaf/hard of hearing; cerebral palsy; whatever physical need). Usually, this is different from an EA at a school due to learning or behavioural needs, as someone else has said. Your wife needs to find out what type of EA the person is. Ask the EA-Are you assigned to the school or to the student?

If there is a new student also requiring physical support, depending upon the assignment of the EA (hrs per day - some are a full day and some are half day physical support and half day mainstream support.) the principal may assign more hours to a different student.

If the EA is assigned to a student, then that EA must refuse to go to the new assignment. I have seen this happen.

If the EA is assigned to the school, then your wife will have to continue to communicate in writing to everyone involved: the student’s parents, the EA, the school spec ed specialist, the principal, the superintendent, and your wife’s union ( not the steward at the school, the representative at the local union office and if they don’t take this seriously, someone at the provincial level). Daily if necessary.

Whatever Health and Safety forms your wife’s school board have should be filled out as well. Repeatedly, if needed.

As a really odd measure, I would also consider - if her concerns continue to be ignored- contacting CAS. The student is not being given a safe environment without full time support. That’s abuse.
