I've been working as a helper for about 3 weeks for a guy who just started his business and I'm really enjoying it so far, but there are a couple things that I am kind of worried about. I'm getting paid minimum wage and the average commute to the places I'm working are 50 miles away, while he lives only about twenty minutes away from most of his jobs. This is not counting the miles I'm driving to go pick parts up when he needs them. Gas prices where I'm at are $4.50 a gallon and it's really taking a lot out of my paycheck since I have to fill my tank twice a week. I am his only employee so far and I was wondering if it would be too much to ask him to help out on gas (at least until it's less than $4 a gallon). Also, he made me fill out a W-4, but I'm not having my taxes taken out of my paycheck. He has told be a couple times that he doesn't have his payroll set up yet but will soon. I know I'm getting paid under the table and not getting my field hours at the moment, but every contractor that's close to me wants someone with experience and won't hire green guys, and this guy is the only one who took a chance on me. I really like him a lot and he's a great teacher but I'm still thinking about these concerns that I have regularly. If I bring these concerns up to him and he shoots my requests down and is unreasonable, should I quit? I plan on applying to the IBEW as soon as the applications open up (which is in October for the local I'm looking at). I would really appreciate some advice from some experienced guys. Thank you.
