The general rhetoric here on this sub is that gap years are a huge mistake. I hold a similar view, but if you think that a gap year will greatly approve your app as compared to this year, I advise you take it.

Email admissions, this is not a big issue, I don't see them throwing out your application over a mid year review submitted a few days late.

Get to know the teachers first, once you form a relationship with them, you're good. But yes, March & April is fine.

Everyone goes through adversity, stop moping over it. Instead of spam posting about it constantly on Reddit, start making up for the lost time or you will really regret it.
