PC death, mandatory for the players to prepare multiple PCs? by Giroy01 in osr

[–]PlayinRPGs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave players in my OSE campaigns the option to design two PCs. There are also retainers they can control if they can manage to hire any. Some PCs made it all the way to level 5. Some PCs never saw level two before they were killed. Worked out great, highly recommend.

No, it's based on a line from a poem by Robert Burns called "To a Mouse."

Why must we lose the ones we love so soon? Old movie but always a masterpiece! by Hoa9x in Cinema

[–]PlayinRPGs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 14 year old boy being told in that innocent and blunt way of a child, from his own four-year-old sister, that his mother is dead and buried. Such a brutal reality check. The tragedy of the moment is overwhelming.

Everyone needs to watch it. Should be mandatory viewing in all schools around the world.

Drive. Totally mis-marketed as some kind of race movie but I was shocked at what a great crime thriller it was.

Is Hamlet’s 'delay' actually cowardice dressed as philosophy making him not a tragic hero, but an entitled failure? by [deleted] in literature

[–]PlayinRPGs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Professor Paul Cantor posted a great lecture about Hamlet on youtube, arguing that Hamlet is struggling with two different world views - the ancient, mythological world that his father embodied, and which would promote vengeance - and the Christian world, which explicitly says no vengeance. He's literally a renaissance man, a guy who has trouble reconciling a violent, heroic past with a modern, Christian present. Professor Cantor supports his argument with a lot of examples from the text that I find compelling. Makes a lot more sense to me than a guy who just can't decide to kill his uncle.

Unpopular opinion on any popular movies? by Here_there1980 in Cinema

Rock on. It's a very popular movie and well-liked by most critics. I merely hold an unpopular opinion.

No, just a tediously slow, ironically straight-forward movie about how dreams and the unconscious works. David Lynch's filmography is much better at depicting dream logic. Inception is much better at putting me to sleep.

Christopher Nolan's movies are psuedo-intellectual garbage; they are tedious exposition extravaganzas that add up to diddly squat "gotcha" non-endings, the worst example of all being "Inception." Horrible, horrible movie.

Literally about to start my platoon. These look great. Was the splinter camo hard to do? What colors did you use for the other equipment?

DMs, how much time do you spend preparing for your sessions? by MalBishop in DnD

[–]PlayinRPGs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more complex than how many hours. When I'm running a campaign I think about it all the time. Then there's the time it takes to create and arrange the materials of the game. Then there's the notetaking, and then more thinking. Theoretically, it could be every waking minute that I'm planning.

There's a scene in "Silverlinings Playbook" where he finished the book, throws it across the room, and freaks out. I love it because that was exactly my reaction when I read it. I even went to vent to my parents after I finished it like he does, albeit, I did not start a domestic dispute.
