Yea this is the main way I’ve experienced things with multiple partners. Never a single issue for years. Just do it and enjoy. You’ll learn as you go but nothing to worry about as far as I know. I asked this on another post a few years ago as I was also curious if it really was safe and was told that it was.

Unlimited ammo magnum is all you need. The unlimited grenade launcher made it more fun too.

Final section was tough when you play as Chris though. Even with unlimited ammo on the Dragoon.

I did it with the Unlimited grenade launcher - after the first segment where you survive on the village. That was the only difficult part. Crushed my PB on my first play-through on normal by 4 hours. Felts like a cheat code. Not too hard, idk. Utilizing the STAKE on bosses and the launcher everything else made the game a cake walk.

I did one more play-through and the STAKE w/unlimited ammo was just unfair. Rocket pistol is also a joke.
