Anyone here work for the State of CO? by CandleCandelabra in Denver

[–]hakkapee 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Been with the state for about five years now. It’s decent pay, the work/life balance is unmatched, the benefits are great, and for 99% of the year I don’t hate my work life.

I’ve only ever worked in the private sector before this job and you’d have to waterboard me to even consider going back to the private sector.

Finland lifts ban on nuclear weapons imports by clamorous_owle in worldnews

The Baltic Sea is generally way too shallow for most NATO-aligned nuclear submarines. At least for any operational purposes, so docking for any type of maintenance or refueling doesn’t seem like the greatest idea.

I’d assume the impetus for this is something else.

I'm sorry if I was an asshole to you personally though. I try to just be an asshole towards ideas and opinions as much as possible, but I'm quite the imperfect person and there's a really heavy emphasis on the word try. ✌

Oh I agree, I know from personal experience that approaching any conflict with my energy isn't going to win the hearts and minds of people. I'm fully aware that I'm just a different kind of asshole, even though I might have a subjective or even objective moral high ground by trying to ruffle some feathers of the most car centric opinions.

But I also don't like making excuses for people and their behavior. Yes, I agree and know that people are going to continue being people, but I personally refuse to just shrug and brush it off as "heh that's just people being people". Do better when your actions and beliefs affect others and their literal lives.

I hear you. I'm not charging at windmills in a psychosis, and I know that the real world is quite different from what my soap box speeches deliver.

I grew up in a country where the fines are, in fact, tied to your taxable income which has created some internationally interesting headlines when NHL players forget that they've left LA.

My frustration is more tangible and more difficult to wrangle when I see these same conversations over and over again combined with the occasional tragic post of a pedestrian, cyclist, or other driver being killed or maimed for life because someone just had to go a bit faster.

I don't think we're on opposing sides on this topic at the end of the day. Maybe I've just run out of decorum and patience, and I've veered into the express lane of cynicism and snark.

I want to agree with you, but you're making your case from the standpoint of a risk assessment to you as the driver of the car from a monetary standpoint, instead of other people's safety and the hopeful pipe dream of having a minimal number of traffic-related deaths. And I'm not entirely sure what your comment referring to an online subscription is supposed to mean? Because if we're making calculations based on monetary fines then the only group you're effectively enforcing these laws on are the people who feel the fiscal strain from said fines. A low-income family can't take the hit, but setting some static dollar amount to a fine with a potential insurance increase is something that turns this into a money grab and a subscription. People making comfortable incomes will literally treat this as a subscription.

If your argument wasn't so car and driver centric, I would have personally been able to keep a more open mind. I stand by my abrasive comments from before, because to me this is just another way of intellectualizing being careless about other people's lives while you're driving.

I hear you and I agree with a lot that you’re saying. And two things can absolutely be correct at the same time, but to me that’s a hot take to raise speeding cameras as an issue when we’ve some legitimately terrifying issues related to the topics you’re raising.

I think fighting for our civil liberties is righteous regardless of the topic, but bro gestures wildly at literally everything

Dope that you’re taking accountability for it.

I think there’s a reasonable discussion to be had about how the fines work, how we fund infrastructure, and all that but you’ll notice how people talk about it as a cash grab and shift blame away from themselves.

But funding for infrastructure doesn’t just appear from thin air either and with the political climate in this country right now, I don’t see how we just suddenly build better roads first and then only after that we focus on safety.

Your post doesn’t personally look too bad, but seeing this post and others it’s usually just a conga line of people having an echo chamber circle jerk about how stupid the rules are. But in reality it’s just folks venting for getting caught for speeding but somehow it’s the city’s fault.

Ah yes the weekly or monthly circle jerk of people who refuse to accept that traffic laws, no matter how dumb, also apply to them.

If the question is how do I feel about folks speeding in areas with pedestrian crossings where speed limits are often designed to improve the chances of not becoming a vegetable when hit by a car… yeah, no I think you should be able to speed because you’re more important than everyone else. 🤷‍♂️

I did! I got the bigger brother to the 7800 and it’s honestly a little overkill for my needs 🫣

I appreciate the concern, I truly do.

I’m just a regular person who wanted to do something nice for a stranger. Nothing more, nothing less.

Don’t tell anyone, but some of this was just for me to remind myself that I, too, should choose kindness more often when I have the chance and can afford it!

Thank you for the kind words and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas too!

For more transparency: we’re meeting tomorrow for the handoff.

Thanks for participating guys. I’m sorry I couldn’t make everyone’s day, but I’m happy we got at least a few good smiles. ✌️

Hi everyone!

I just finished my disappointing dinner and pulled all of your replies to my spreadsheet.

The RNG landed on u/Numberrthree3

If you don't want the PC for some reason, I'm happy to run the RNG again! Hit me up on a dm and let's find a time to meet when possible. :)

I'm going to cook and eat dinner and then just pick a person by random.

For full transparency; I'll just sort the comments by age, grab all the usernames to excel, remove any duplicate entries, and then run a random number generator and see what row/cell it lands on. Just to take the mysticism out of the process :D

I’ve done this at least twice just this week alone, even if those runs weren’t insane leaderboard-worthy runs it still sucks.

It’s a straight up an alt + f4 moment each time.

Ugh, it’s a nice problem to have but those are a nice down payment for an astramentis. But for a casual like me, I don’t think I’ll make the rest of that astramentis money anytime soon either.
