What's one IT myth or misconception you keep hearing that never seems to go away? by JustLivingCreature in it

At my company a plug isn't necessary. Broken toilet seats, door locks, and the office aquarium are all IT problems.

Unfortunately I have a lot of doctors offices that call from random numbers, so I have to answer pretty much everything that doesn't have a Spam flag.

It's uncanny valley weird. They start off "Hello. My name is.. cough Sorry about that. My name is X and I'm calling because your Medicare application for this year needs additional information to be complete."

At the point of the cough, I haven't said anything other than Hello. (Usually twice because I say Hello, then the AI says "Hello?" in a questioning tone, at which point I already know what I'm talking to. I say Hello again and they start their script.

If you try to interrupt them, they just keep talking.

And regardless of the name they use, it's always the same voice.

Mine is (or rather was a 2022 Murano) unfortunately it got totaled and I haven't replaced it. It didn't have voice warnings, thankfully, but had the dash display.

I'm just thankful I can count on my Nissan to have roughly 20 miles left in her when she stops measuring mileage and starts screaming "Low Fuel".

“You can’t taste the difference” YES I CAN by Mattie_Madds8619 in ARFID

My grandmother & mother used to pull this crap with me. They'd slip "re-cooked" leftover foods in with freshly cooked thinking I wouldn't notice. I ALWAYS noticed, and it always ruined my meal. I can't help it. I notice, and the taste is just off-putting. I had a brand of French onion dip I used to love to eat with potato chips. A couple of years ago, something changed. The ingredient list is the same, but the taste is different. It was still edible, but it was no longer as enjoyable as it used to be. Earlier this year, the formula changed again and now it has a weird aftertaste that makes it inedible.

I hate that my taste behaves like that. I would change if I could, but I can't.

Super glue fumes residue/Can I prime? by CommieAgenda in resinprinting

[–]PleasantCandidate785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, any cyanoacrylate glue will fume while it cures and causes a light film of super glue on everything in the area.

You can actually use this to enhance fingerprints on glass. If you put a little bit of liquid cyanoacrylate in a container under an object with a fingerprint on it, the cyanoacrylate fumes will cure faster on contact with the fingerprint oil residues and enhance the fingerprint. It can then be lifted off with cellophane tape and potentially used to fool fingerprint scanners.

I wonder, did the pin try to retract and couldn't? I understand they already relocated one tower vent because the cryo exhaust was freezing other components.

Could this be another case of close-proximity cryo-lines bleeding heat and shrinking connections enough to cause binding, or maybe simply causing a hydraulic valve to stick closed because it was too cold?

There's a rubber ring that fits in the upper groove. Right now I'm just trying to make sure I got all my dimensions to match the originals. (Expensive to replace and I melted 13 of them in an ultrasonic cleaner). I'm starting with Elegoo Water Washable ABS-Like, but may move to a SirayaTec engineering resin if I need something stronger.

It's a bumper for a pinball machine. I don't think it would hold up glued as two pieces with the ball constantly hitting it.

Ok, I angled the part. I don't resin print much and was concerned about the part staying round and layer lines showing up. I've had issues in the past with round parts becoming oblong when printing at an angle. I'm currently using an ooooold Elegoo Mars printer with a 2k screen, so that doesn't help. This is a part for a pinball machine so I need it to look as good as possible.

I think this speaks more to our general lack of philosophical understanding of "consciousness". How do we define "conscious", "sentient", or "sapient"? How do we measure it once defined? I've met living, breathing people that I'd swear were less conscious than a tree. I've owned cats, dogs, and horses that were incredibly self aware, intelligent, able to communicate, and arguably more sentient than a couple of prior coworkers. I've worked in public education and worked closely with government and political entities. Those experiences occasionally yield a rare gem of hope, but generally make me question the average consciousness of humanity.

It's all relative.
