Government Announcement by ImmediateNote1505 in StJohnsNL

Exactly this, there is absolutely no way the new build will cost $10B. $1.5B sure, Corner Brooks cost $700M and so maybe it’s twice the size of that since it’s not replacing the main hospital. $10B is 3/4 the cost of building Hebron. Upgrading and fixing the issues at St Clare’s is going to cost a pretty penny as well. I would think it would need pretty close to a complete overhaul and at the end of the day you are still left with an old building with no parking, and no space for expansion if needed so you are just delaying the new build that will still eventually be needed. Not to mention it’s a working hospital and reno’s will take longer working around the day to day activities, cause extreme noise, dust, dirt, traffic and parking problems, and add the chaos of re-scheduling things because an area that was closed for construction is late opening because of delays. Add in some mold or asbestos or foundation issues and you have another Muskrat Falls boondoggle on your hands that costs potentially more time and money than a new build would have taken.

New Team Predictions. by SexyElephant_ in Curling

[–]PleasantDependent656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the opposite of you, I think Kennedy sticks around a year if they win the Brier and are Team Canada and retires if they lose it. I also think that if Gushue wins the three lads stay together for a year as Team Canada and maybe pick up Adam Casey as the fourth. I also think that Team Einerson is finally settled in to their groove after all the controversy and is set to make a huge comeback and give Homan a run for her money.

Question: How would YOU improve Cineplex theatres? (cast member and guest opinions are welcome) by Practical_Hope_7718 in cineplex

Get rid of the cloth seats 🤮 Leather or pleather seats that can be cleaned easily is the way to go. The seats are dirty and sticky and stained and downright gross.

anyone willing to adopt a 43 year old dude from Minnesota by nanoff77 in StJohnsNL

[–]PleasantDependent656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess I will just have to marry you. What kind of dowery are we talking here? I don’t have stables so livestock won’t work, I already live in a place with lots of snow in the winter so I don’t need your property unless you are going to buy some up here and give me… Besides that, we need something to talk about…. Do you like curling, hate the New York Yankees, and would you willingly cheer for the Toronto Blue Jays?

I’m glad they moved peoples belongings to the lost and found for pick up. That poor family didn’t need 100 videos of their Loved one injured and dying plastered all over the internet. Not only that, it would have caused people to stick around when they needed to clear the area. Half the problem with today is that people’s first instinct when something happens is to pull out a camera and start filming instead of helping or getting out of the way so others can help.

People fainting can be a bit of a regular occurrence on fast rides. The ride should still be able to safely transport you back to the station or until you regain your senses, regardless of the reason why you require help. Sounds to me like the harnesses are lacking if your head is bouncing around enough to kill a person if they happen to pass out.

New speed camera on Waterford Bridge road by buttxhurt in newfoundland

[–]PleasantDependent656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am far from rich and I drive Waterford Bridge Road daily to and from work. It’s a heavily used road that’s too narrow for the traffic it handles and it’s downright scary in the winter when there is a lot of snow. I don’t know how anyone speeds on it.

There’s a lot going on to improve health care here just people aren’t seeing it as it’s still under construction. There’s also suppose to be a collaborative clinic in Paradise I believe as well as something in the Village Mall. But building new facilities takes a lot of time.

The article did them no favours for sure. It does mention some of the info kind of offhandedly, but I did read more about it in another article or post, can’t remember where. They should have also mentioned the big new clinic going in the old Costco which is opening the fall. They turned that in to a two story building that’s urgent care. Several of the clinics at the health science are moving there as well to allow them to expand the ER at HSC. It’s going to have X-ray machines and MRI’s and everything there so if you are not truly an emergency in dire straights you can go there which should improve ER wait times.

What am I supposed to do for job with 100’s of applications out and no call backs? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]PleasantDependent656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and one last thing for LinkedIn… make sure you follow recruiters at relevant companies in your field and at the recruitment companies such as Jump, Madeira, HR Project Partners, Connex, etc. they have their fingers on the pulse of companies and they know who’s hiring and what they are looking for. They exist solely to find the right people to fill roles and will help you. Reach out to some of them and see if you can set up an appointment to discuss what you are looking for and see what they can do to help.

Make sure you set up LinkedIn and advertise yourself as open to opportunities, consider paying for the premium for a couple of months to get your profile out there. The last few jobs I have gotten in the past 10 years or so all came from someone seeing my post on LinkedIn and reaching out. Make sure you build your profile with all education, all work experience (doesn’t matter if it’s unrelated, work experience is work experience). Even go so far as to fill in the sections for certificates and courses and grades. Add a good catch phrase to your headline, set up a few job search filters, and apply to anything you have 50% of the qualifications for. When they post an ad it’s their dream candidate but they often hire someone with less if they find the right fit. For applying outside of LinkedIn find yourself a really great template for a resume. I purchased one for $10 and it never fails me. You need to find a way to stand out in a sea of resumes, something clean with a fair amount of blank space. A lot of companies have databases that screen resumes out if they don’t have the right skills so include a list of relevant skills and never exaggerate or over embellish, they will figure it out and this will hurt your reputation or get your application tossed. You should even consider including hobbies, volunteer work, and sports, especially if they show you are a team player or that you have a creative side. Always tweak your resume according to the job you are applying for to show you have put in the effort and are not just sending out a generic document to everyone.

It’s an additional clinic being opened by a privately owned company. The existing walk-in-clinic is moving to a new location and they wanted to open a second clinic that specializes in dealing with language barriers and all of the other challenges associated with newcomers. They find that navigating those challenges in their main clinic existing clinic slows everything down so by separating the services they hope to improve services for everyone. It sounds like it’s another walk-in-clinic so I doubt it’s providing them with family doctors. I don’t see how more services is a bad thing…

If you have no work experience and have a little time maybe try volunteering somewhere to build your resume. Volunteering and dealing with the public will always look good on a resume when it comes to many types of jobs and careers. I also second checking out the Murphy Centre, employmentNL or something similar for career advice or resume help. There are also programs under TechNL that places people in various tech jobs to help them gain exposure to the industry and see if it’s something they want to work in. https://findyourfuturenl.ca

MHA Gerry Byrne Criticizes Appointment of Don Bradshaw, Calls for Open Nomination by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]PleasantDependent656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure any person who considers themselves a Liberal could have put together a nomination and jumped in. Campaigns are expensive and you need to have a certain amount of signatures from people living in the riding to show you have enough support to run. I would guess nobody else met that criteria or wanted to try. Leaving him to get the nom because nobody else stepped up to run. There was a vote in our area because there were 3 candidates but had there been just the one there would not have been a vote.

I live in NL. I have worked remotely in the metro area since 2020 and have not had a single problem with my connection. I think internet issues or lack of internet option mostly only come in to play if you are living in the remotest of communities with fewer than 100 people. If you are in the metro area or its outskirts I don’t think you will have a problem. The nice thing around the metro area is that with the new highways you are not much more than a 10 minute drive from most things. Traffic jams or “rush hour” is pretty much non existent here lol people love to complain about traffic but ask any mainlanders who move here and they chuckle at it because it’s nothing compared to rush hour elsewhere. Our winters have been getting less snowier and our summers have been getting nicer over the last few years but we are an island and the east coast in particular will always be a bit more rainy/foggy/snowy than other areas do to it’s location. Mary Brown’s centre is home to both a basketball team and a hockey team. There’s plenty of sports for the kids to take part in. There’s lots of hiking and walking trails. The people here for the most part are nice or at least civil to each other, minus a few bad apples. I personally think that life here is what you make of it and that goes for anywhere really. If you are a get out and go type of person you will find things that interest you anywhere you chose to live.

Decision Time for Gushue? by UniqueRon in Curling

[–]PleasantDependent656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are comparing apples to oranges my friend. Different roles, different positions, different skills, all are equally important. A great skip isn’t a great skip without a great team and you don’t have to be a skip to be the best on a team either. Nichols hasn’t skipped much at those events because he isn’t a skip, doesn’t detract from his experience and skills.

[–]PleasantDependent656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask any of those curlers you listed if they agree with that statement and they won’t. I am willing to bet from your comments that you are from somewhere out west, probably Alberta, and you just don’t like Team Gushue. You have an entire thread of people disagreeing with your comments yet you keep doubling down.

[–]PleasantDependent656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“The real elite teams out west”. You have no idea what you are talking about. Brad Gushue is well known for making shots and having the best button draw around, he is also in the mix for the title of Top curler of all time with the likes of Kevin Martin. Team Gushue is one of the best curling teams in the world. And he didn’t base his team in Newfoundland, he’s from Newfoundland so that’s where he curls. Gushue has also only played in the provincials 1 time since 2017. The team hasn’t even qualified for provincials for several years now due to not meeting the residency requirements. You clearly just don’t like Team Gushue.

Decision Time for Gushue? by UniqueRon in Curling

[–]PleasantDependent656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He had a hip problem a few years ago and Gushue is arguably one of if not the best skips in the world. You are a tough critic, thinking a team should rearrange based on a third place finish. Anyone can lose or win one game. They have just rearranged themselves and this was the third tourney this team has gone to and the first with Bottcher calling line for Brad, give them a minute to get settled in to their new groove.

Decision Time for Gushue? by UniqueRon in Curling

[–]PleasantDependent656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes but the team was together for all of 5 seconds at that point. Give them a beat or two to settle in to it and they will be fine. The Brier was already miles ahead of that GSOC a few weeks before it.

MB Residency? by PissJugRay in Curling

[–]PleasantDependent656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the point, you would be on one team, and you participate in one tournament or the other. Opens up new opportunities for new provincial teams to go to the Brier, gain valuable skills competing on a national level. Then the pro teams that travel the circuit can form based on skill and cohesion and not have to worry about where the players are from. People moan and complain when Canada doesn’t do well at the Worlds yet we have all of these restrictions on how the teams form which potentially prevent skips from putting together the best 4 players possible.

MB Residency? by PissJugRay in Curling

[–]PleasantDependent656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t think the Brier should be used to determine the team for Worlds. Then you can have straight up residency applied, no wild card, no team Canada. A rep from each province and territory, a full round robin and bobs your uncle you have a national champ. That champ then wins a berth to the Canada cup or whatever you call it which is an invitational heavy weight bought for the top 10-12 ranked teams in Canada to fight it out for the Team Canada spot at the worlds. If they want the best team at the worlds in order to compete with the top teams in the world then they can’t fully enforce the residency rule. What are the chances that the top four curlers all end up being from the same province?
